Somewhere in Miami, Joe Barry must be envious of the talent at safety that’s been handed to new Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Never mind, for a moment, the merits of Joe Barry as defensive coordinator. Or the pros and cons of switching to a 4-3 base defense.

There is one obvious reason why the Green Bay Packers will be better on defense in 2024.

In 2023, after general manager Brian Gutekunst made a minimal investment at safety, Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens and Rudy Ford combined to play about 2,000 snaps. Owens started the final 11 games and broke up three passes. Savage started 10 games and broke up one pass. Moreover, Savage and rookie Anthony Johnson, who played about 300 snaps as a seventh-round pick, ranked among the worst-tackling safeties in the league.

Gutekunst didn’t make the same mistake this year.

Step 1 was signing Xavier McKinney to a four-year, $67 million contract in free agency. By total value and annual value, McKinney is the fourth-highest-paid safety in the NFL.

For good reason.

I'm not so sure it's safe to say that...

10th best in points scored against at 20.6 per game. And a lot more rookies playing in a brand new system.

Never liked the Barry hire but he suckered me in after his first season ("well that wasn't terrible like I thought it would be"). Hearing from Hafley so far has me excited. I'm ready to be hurt again

I mean tbf, our defense played well and we made a nice playoff run at the end. Inexperience killed us more so than bad defense.

Year after year we've heard that the Packer's defense was going to be better than last year. "Look at all those first round draft picks" was repeated over and over again. I think this year it will finally come true.

Nevertheless, I can't remember the timeline, but was Hadley hired before we signed McKinney and bid adieu to Savage?

If so, that might indicate to me that his acceptance of the job may have been provisional, i.e. "yea I would love the job, but don't expect much unless we have some real safeties as your guys stink."

Another theory might be if our guys were so bad, perhaps our deployment and schemes were appropriate and Barry may have overachieved relative to the talent with which he had to work.

Mucky Tundra (3h) : Notre Dame? more like Notre Lame!
Martha Careful (3h) : it was great to see Northern Illinois upset Notre Dame at Notre Dame
Mucky Tundra (6h) : I mean, they traded for Willis after a year and a half of Clifford, seems pretty definitive
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : Do we with Clifford or Willis? You'd think Clifford has a better knowledge of the playbook
Mucky Tundra (8h) : Definitely filing that under the "I'm getting old" category
Mucky Tundra (8h) : Donald Drivers son Christian caught a TD pass playing for the University of Minnesota today.
Zero2Cool (8h) : Packers QB Jordan Love's initial timetable for return is in the 3-6 week range, per sources. And there's some early optimism he could return
Zero2Cool (14h) : Initial tests indicated Jordan Love’s ACL is intact. But there’s a wide range of outcomes based on additional scans, which will occur when t

dfosterf (6-Sep) : Pie is good. You get no pie and fewer wins in fantasy due to being inflexible
Zero2Cool (5-Sep) : I like pie.
