So
Preseason Physically Unable to Perform (PUP)
- OLB Rashan Gary
- CB Eric Stokes
- OL Jake Hanson
- WR Jeff Cotton
Active PUP (or Preseason PUP as I call it) is for players that have not passed their physicals yet this season for NFL related injuries (I.E. injuries on NFL property). And if you haven't passed your physical, then oblivious you haven't been allowed to practice. Also you do count against the 90 man roster.
Reserve PUP (or In Season PUP as I call it), means you still haven't passed your physical nor practice yet this season, you don't count against the 53 man roster, and also means they will miss the first four games of the season (used to be first six games).
Traditional you can not be placed on the Reserve PUP unless you are currently on the Active PUP list and I believe that's still true, but the NFL explanation to the public failed to specifically say that. But they also did not say there was any changes from previous years, so I assume it's still true.
DT Montravius Adams needed surgery after breaking his foot in the first or second day of practice one year and couldn't be placed on either PUP list.
Non-Football Injury (NFI)
- WR Grant DuBose
- TE Camren McDonald
NFI is like the PUP, but PUP is for NFL related activities or injuries once a player is in the NFL and players still get their salary. While the NFI is for non-NFL related injuries (I.E. Did not happen on NFL property).
And more importantly those on the NFI are not entitled to their salary. Which is why players have a couple sayings which basically suggest, if you get injured, then don't tell anyone until you practice on NFL property and then tell them, so you still get paid.
Also NFI doesn't have two different names like Active PUP and Reserve PUP to confuse everyone, it just keeps it simple and uses one name the entire time.
