We all assume the Green Bay Packers are going to pick up that 5th year option on QB Jordan Love.  Should they though? That's $20.27 million on that 2024 salary cap.

Assuming Packers pick up that option, the Packers are at $267m and with the cap projected to be $235m that's about $32m over the salary cap. Of course, that doesn't deduct the $40m for Aaron Rodgers. And if he gets traded post June 1st, that $40m gets lowered to something like $24m which still is a heavy price.

Yes, I know, it's not likely Rodgers is traded during June or after. Yes, I want it to go that long. Yes, it's solely so I can keep watching people like Rich Eisen and Mike Greenberg completely lose their minds ranting 'WHY IS THIS NOT DONE YET OMG WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG'. Ideally, for the Packers, the Jets would just give up their 1st and 4th overall picks for 2023 draft and call it a day.

My suggestion is do Love like they did Rodgers. Let him play half the season and then sign him to an extension. What do you say?

Most QBs struggle a bit their first year starting, and Love will probably struggle a bit especially since we gutted the receiving targets and the OL hasn't seemed to be up to par with what we're used to.

Let's say Love struggles, is the team going to give up on him right away? Probably not... they're probably give him another chance. So turning down the option, doesn't do much for you, as you still need to sign a starting QB in 2024. And poor starting QBs like Ryan Tannehill, Geno Smith and Jimmy Garoppolo are making $24.25 to $29.5 million. So be refusing to give Love $20.27 million, your basically losing $4 million, there is no upside here unless Love is so absolutely horrible he doesn't deserve a chance of starting again.

But picking up the option, you're giving Love an additional year to prove himself, and if he's successful, then you're saving yourself $20 million, as the Giants failed to do, when they turned down QB Daniel Jones 5th year option to supposedly save $20 million, only to resign him to a $40 million per year deal and they actually lost $20 million.

Unless Love is absolutely horrible, and is a career backup only level of play, there is no upside in turning the 5th year option down.

And you can always extend him, even with the 5th year option if he plays amazingly.

Absolutely pick up his 5th year option.

The 2023 cap hit is not going to change.
2024 will be guaranteed 20+mil

There Is a crazy option.
I say this because if J.Love works out, the longer they wait, the more it's going to cost The Packers.

The Packers could pick up the option, then immediately Sign Love to a 3 year, 120mil extension.

They could convert the apprx. 24mil to a signing bonus,Then add another 36mil in guaranteed money.

That would be apprx 60mil, The Packers could spread out over 5 years,
backload The rest (84mil) 2025-2027.
.
The Packers have their starter for 5 years locked in at an average of just under 30mil a year.

The contract could be re-evaluated after the 2024 season. Put it in the contract.

The 2023 season is the last year the salary cap is effected by The covid money agreement The players and teams made.
I expect a huge jump next year.
25-30mil or more.
J.Love would get a 60mil payday this year, The Packers will have time to evaluate him.

What you talking 2023 salary cap for? You even read this thread? 🤣 Teasing, but I am confused on the 2023 salary cap talk. The 5th year option hits the 2024, not 2023.  When Packers flipped the train switch to Aaron Rodgers, I had said I didn't see Rodgers winning games, but felt confident he wouldn't lose us games. We can debate if I was accurate on that or not another time, but I think Jordan Love will be more Brett Favre than Aaron Rodgers. Meaning I think he will win us some games, but also cost us some games.

If that 5th year option salary hit in 2024 can be altered by extension, then I am fine with the 5th year option. In other words, Mark Murphy, I will allow it!

If I'm Love I play out the next two years and cash in - if he's even an average starter he's getting $40m a year (see: Daniel Jones). And in two years the cap should be significantly higher.

But I would admire the audacity to get this sorted out and build a team around Love sooner rather than later. If it doesn't work out it's not that big of a deal since it would be a below-market deal that wouldn't be too hard to swallow if they suck and need to draft another guy.

beast (2-Jan) : Thanks dfosterf, I'm still kicking myself for last week, as I forgot to change to pick Vikings and Lions... after putting in a holding spot.

Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : Or we got better and by we I mean everyone except me
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : We have about six that by percent would have won nearly any season. I guess 2024 was predictable 🤷

dfosterf (2-Jan) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (2-Jan) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season

Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : BTW, not serious.
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You don't care about it either!!!!

Mucky Tundra (2-Jan) : outside of Texas-Arizona St, it's been a snoozefest
beast (2-Jan) : I expect Georgia will change that tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see. If they do, then only Big 10 and SEC are left.

Zero2Cool (31-Dec) : Packers. Steelers. Ireland. 2025. Reports say.
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Matt Lafleur on if Jaire will play again this season. "Yeah I don't know... he's been dealing with swelling."
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : After the way they played for most of the game yesterday, I don't see how you can sit anyone for the whole game
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : I'd say play everyone. Going into playoffs at 7th seed on two game lose streak - yucky
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Do the Packers have any best players?
beast (30-Dec) : Play or Rest*
beast (30-Dec) : Should the Packers play or free their best players vs the Bears?
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Packers should be 3 - 2 in the Division. Bonkers being swept by both Lions and Vikings. yikes
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : All crazy stuff…and good point beast
beast (30-Dec) : Packers should be 0-5 in the division, can't say I saw that coming, even 1-4
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Sam Darnold 35 TD's ... another one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Baker Mayfield, 39 TD's ... can't say I saw that one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : No matter who is playing as 7th, I think we want them to win. Get rid of 2nd seed haha
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : That would be dhazer who was rooting for Minnesota
beast (30-Dec) : Well, Commanders are currently the 6th seed and Packers the 7th
beast (30-Dec) : Who was it in Chat, that wanted the Vikings to win (because Lions fans upset them) because Packers could not lose the 6th seed?
beast (30-Dec) : If Falcons win, Packers stay as the 6th seed and Falcons lead the NFCS, if they lose, Commanders 6th and Bucs take NFCS lead
beast (30-Dec) : Win or Loss, the NFCS is going down to week 18
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : if the Falcons win, how does that affect the overall NFC playoff picture? Does it mean that the NFC South comes down to week 18?
beast (30-Dec) : If Commanders win, the Packers drop to the 7th seed
beast (29-Dec) : Taylor still at it!
beast (29-Dec) : Colts get the ball and fumble turn over
packerfanoutwest (29-Dec) : Jets pull Aaron Rodgers for Tyrod Taylor
