Silverstein is pissing me off this morning:

Those two moves could blow up in his face and potentially cost him his job, especially if Raji eats his way out of the league and Crabtree becomes the second coming of Jerry Rice.

Yeah.. if Crabtree turns out to be the best WR in the history of the NFL, and Raji doesn't even play, it could cost him his job. What point is there in making a silly statement like that?

Raji is going to be a monster. WR's like Crabtree come out every freaking year (and the Lions have grabbed most of them recently).

Idk about a guy like Crabtree coming out any year. Maybe on the NFL level, but he has had some good production.

When he's one the sideline for 6 games every year with ankle and/or feet injurys while Raji is collapsing some pockets, Ted Thompson will be a great GM, though.

But what if Crabtree will become a receiver who puts up 1400 yard season after 1400 yard season, there where 8 teams before us passing up on him. Should all the GMs between spot 1-10 be fired?

Everyone remembers how horrible a GM Ron Wolf was when he drafted Vonnie Holliday before Randy Moss.

I think that's wrong. I think it's the other way around. If the Packers took Crabtree and he flopped and Raji excelled, THEN I could see Ted having some issues with job security. Why? Because WR is a strength on this team, NT is a weakness. To pass up a potential plug for a weakness while taking a player that plays for a strength on your roster. I think that is foolish.

This comment from that writer is simply trying to conjure discussion and attention. No one in their intelligent right mind thinks the Packers should have taken a WR over a NT with that 9th pick. You'd have to be really really stoned to think that. Even if Crabtree turns out to be a dominant force and Raji is medicore. The Packers don't NEED WR, they NEED DL badly.

We didn't lost 10 games because of the WR last season.

this. there was no reason to take Crabtree.

also, Zero: i think McCarthy also had to consider how poor Rodgers' protection had been all year. it wasn't necessarily a lack of faith in A-Rod as it was a lack of faith in the O-Line letting A-Rod do his job.

my two cents.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

"Continuity is the bedrock of long-term success."

Thank you William Clay Ford! :)

I could cite dozens of studies in continuity in this league over the years that swirled around the toilet endlessly before the turd disappeared (see "Detroit Lions"). I will grant you that time is necessary in developing a SB caliber team, but in general, that development is recognized fairly early on.

As a for-instance, it was apparent by 1994 that the Packers were on the cusp of an appearance at the big dance; they had a HOF caliber QB and they had Reggie, they had the coaching and a stellar GM (who wasn't afraid to drop a buck or two on the floor), and they had depth.

We're not there yet. I think we have the QB, but there are obvious gaps elsewhere. Hopefully, Raji will help fill the gap in the defense. Our offense was not too much of a problem last year, but Ryan Grant needs to justify his paycheck IMO. Our wides, who presumably are so deep that Ted passed on Crabtree, are not so deep as we think. I would have passed on Crabtree also due to his personality issues that other teams recognized, and also because I believe we have the best wideout in the league already in Greg. But Driver is getting up there in years; Jordy will be fine and Jones might surprise everyone next year with a return to healthy status. We could've used a stud in this category, but I have no problem with picking the D studs ahead of the wides.

Bottom line on this thread; I still think Ted Thompson will never be successful enough to get us to the SB, but he did OK in this draft. I also still have my doubts about Mike McCarthy's play calling, but we'll see what transpires this season.

I fully expect this subject line to appear again next January.

I don't have a problem taking a Dlineman over a wideout. If you look at the best 3-4 teams out there they have all invested in a NT in the first round. Ted Thompson has already put a lot of stock in the WR group and I think we are as deep as anybody there. Sure, we could have taken Crabtree and probably had the best WR group in the NFL. Lot of good it does when you can't stop anyone on defense which is what our problem was last year.

The Tampa Bay Bucs had what was considered one of the top 10 drafts of all time when they took Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks. They became the cornerstone of what became a very good defense. You can't duplicate that and get similar results if you don't copy the recipe and make the investment.

In our division we have to have the defenders to contend with the Petersons and Cutlers and now Staffords and in my opinion it was a much smarter move to bring guys in that can stop other teams. Especially when scoring points isn't our problem.

If we drafted Crabtree would we have really gained much? If comes in and gets 1000+ receiving yards that won't mean that Rodgers had 5000 yards it will just mean one of the other receivers had less yards. That isn't a great offensive improvement. If Raji manages just 4 sacks (would double last years output of the current starting D-line) or improves our run D by 20ypg that is a big improvement.

The impact of having Crabtree on the Packers wouldn't have been found in total passing yards.... it would have been found in completion percentage, third down conversion ratios and probably total points.

Think about Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Jones and Crabtree on the field at one time.. the defense would be so thinned out trying to cover that natural holes would be huge.. Jones, Nelson and Crabtree hitting the unders and Jennings and Driver hitting the seams.. damn that would be tough to defend.

I loved the drama that was part of the chat when Crabtree was on the board, and I personally wouldn't have been upset if he was the pick there.. but all things considered.. we made the best move for the Packers in the situation. Raji sitting there was unexpected by me..

Plus it was fun watch people like Foster squirm a little..

The thing is, I'm not even thinking that. It doesn't matter if Gregorious, Driver, Nelson, JOnes, and Crabtree are all wide open if AR is on his back.

Crabtree would be taking catches for Driver. Crabtree gets open by overpowering while Driver gets open by finesse and flawless communication between him and the QB.

Both make catches. The upgrade is so slight. Yes, Driver is in his last years and Crabtree may play for ten, but let's not forget we got a few young studs in Jones and Jordy. I'm still convinced Jones will eventually replace Driver and Jordy will make a really nice 3rd. Jones had an off year last year but don't rule him out. Given time, he's going to be solid.

We allowed 131+ ypg last year on the ground. People were running up the middle all day long and we knew they were going to do it and they still managed to do it. I think we had the 27th best D against the run last year. That hole is sooo huge.

Would have loved to see Foster squirm. Too bad I wasn't there (I was in the studio while you guys were all in chat).

All in all, I'm stoked. I'm glad we didn't get Crabtree. If he does great on the Niners, cool. I got a lot of Niner friends here and as long as they're not playing us, I generally smile when the Niners win.
