Green Bay drafted yet another player who came to visit the Packers during the pre-draft process. After trading back in round five with the Denver Broncos , the Green Bay Packers  would end up with four selections in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft . The first of those four came at number 228 overall, a pick that the Packers acquired from the Houston Texans  last August in exchange for cornerback Ka’Dar Hollman.
With that 228th selection, the Green Bay Packers found some depth for their defense and special teams, selecting linebacker Tariq Carpenter from Georgia Tech . Carpenter is yet another draft pick in this year’s class who took an official visit to Green Bay this offseason, joining Devonte Wyatt, Christian Watson, and Romeo Doubs in that category.
A safety in college, Carpenter was noted as a linebacker when the pick was announced, a sign that the Packers see him making a similar transition to that of Oren Burks back in 2018. In fact, both players are particularly similar in terms of their size, speed and explosiveness traits. Carpenter stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 230 pounds, running the 40-yard dash in a reported 4.52 seconds. He also has one of the most explosive broad jumps in history for a linebacker at a whopping 11 feet, 4 inches. However, the one area where he struggles athletically is in his agilities, which were the only subpar measurements and bring his RAS down out of the 9 range (it still sits at 8.92).
Carpenter will likely be tabbed as a special teams contributor early on. He was a four-year starter for the Yellow Jackets at safety, however, getting an extra year of eligibility for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now he heads to Green Bay to give them a heat-seeking missile as a depth linebacker and special teams piece.
The Packers will be back on the clock soon with the 237th overall selection.

Last thing I want to read is comparing him to Oren Burks. We just got rid of that fool.

Hopefully Carpenter can turn into a special teams ace. Or I will feel like this was a wasted pick. I do get the feeling that Rich Bisaccia had some influence on a couple of these late round picks. I don't mind a little focus on special teams in the 7th round, but I also hope he can show something at ILB. Would be nice to have some more depth there.

Burks, Black and Yiadom all played over 70% of the Packers ST snaps and they're all gone... that's a lot of freaking snaps!

Summers played over 60% of the snaps, and he's a solid, but with all due respect, he's an average athlete.

I'm surprised to see that TE David played over 50% of the snaps considering I believe he was added late in the season. So he'll probably be important to STs.

Jeans-Charles also played over 50% of ST snaps, and top returning DB.

McDuffie and Crosby played over 40%.

Guys that played 30% to 33% of STs snaps

DL Tyler Lancaster, currently gone.
DL Tedarrell Slaton
P Corey Bojorquez, gone.
WR Malik Taylor
TE Josiah Deguara
DL Dean Lowry

I think we expected Taylor might have a huge time making the final roster until they keep at least 7 WRs which they normally don't do.

So we're going to be relying on a lot of new players to the team to step up. And some main ST guys might not even be on the team yet.

The reason he was drafted was for sure special teams though. Gute said his name 3 times when asked if he focused on special teams at all in the 7th round.😏

I'm glad he was a Packers fan as a kid, but I'd rather see he can have impact at ILB. Always good to have quality depth when injuries hit. There is decent depth at ILB, but I am hoping when I go to training camp this summer, that I see this cat can play in the hybrid LB/S role when he is on the grass.

Based on that, I believe a 4-3 OLB role in an aggressive system would be best for him.

7/228. Tariq Carpenter, LB, Georgia Tech (3, 5): A relative unknown until pro day, he probably got drafted on the strength of a 4.52 40 and a safety-best 11-4 broad jump.

Carpenter (6-3, 230) was announced as a linebacker but Gutekunst typically was noncommittal regarding what his position would be. He started at safety for four seasons but several teams graded him as a linebacker.

As the 22nd linebacker taken, Carpenter has deficiencies. Somewhat straight line in his play, he also tends toward being a slow reactor. He has had wrist surgery three times and one shoulder operation.

Gutekunst described Carpenter as “really, really physical.” Two other personnel people said he was more of a get-‘em-down tackler than a punishing hitter.
