Rasheed Walker OT Penn State

Player Bio
Penn State signed Walker from North Point High School in Maryland (where he was coached by former Florida and NFL OT Phil Trautwein) as a four-star recruit. He also had 11 sacks on defense as a senior but played as a reserve offensive lineman in four games before taking a redshirt in 2018. Walker stepped in to start all 13 games at left tackle the following year and then garnered honorable mention All-Big Ten Conference honors the following two seasons playing on the blindside (nine starts in 2020, 10 in 2021, missing the end of the '21 season due to injury). -- by Chad Reuter

Overview
Walker possesses enticing power and measurables but has issues that could be challenging to correct if he stays at tackle. Ohio State defenders were able to burn up his outside edge, which creates concern about his pass pro range, but it can be hard to beat his anchor with pure power. He has issues playing beyond his base, creating chronic over-extension that will be exploited by skilled NFL rush talent. He's capable as a run blocker and should keep getting better with more hand work. Walker projects as a right tackle on the next level but might move inside to guard if his range and balance in pass sets aren't up to par.

Strengths
Displayed ability for quick and vertical sets.
Stout core withstands a bull rush.
Fires hands through defender's pads.
Extends and presses rusher past the arc.
Controlled inside power step for firmer post.
Better hand placement will bolster drive blocking.
Power to shove and clear debris from the lane.
Able to hold his ground in base blocks versus power.
Adequate adjustments in space.

Weaknesses
Might not have enough range to play left tackle.
Base can get too wide in pass sets.
Weight sits on his outside foot in pass slides.
Reaches and leans rather than maintaining flat-back posture.
Opens door wide for a variety of inside counters.
Lacks twitch fitting into run block.
Hands need to be faster and more accurate.
Needs to improve positioning after contact.
Under Construction!

At 6' 6" 313 he's a big boy. Even so I am not sure he will make the final 53. I suppose it depends on how quickly they expect Bak and Jenkins to get back. My guess is PS.

I'm surprised he dropped to the 7th, I think he's inconsistent, but I think he potentially has a long NFL career ahead of him if he can stick as a rookie and fix a couple of things, and learn to play at his top level consistently.

Though long career doesn't nessarily mean starter, but OT Marshall Newhouse was in the NFL for more than a decade.

7/249. Rasheed Walker, T, Penn State (2, 6): He has the cut of a starter, which he was at left tackle from 2019-’21. That plus ideal size (6-5 ½, 324) normally would translate into a second-day selection.

“Reason he fell is he’s got a medical red flag,” said one personnel man. “He’s got a knee that’s not in very good shape. That’s the only reason he fell.”

Walker missed the final three games after playing several games with a torn meniscus and bone bruise in his right knee. At some point he underwent surgery, and thus wasn’t able to work out for teams. With 14 picks left in the draft the Packers rolled the dice and made him the 47th offensive linemen to be selected.

At his best, one scout said Walker looked like an NFL starting left tackle. At his worst, he looked like a candidate for the practice squad.

His arm length is just OK (33 5/8) for tackle. His score of 11 on the Wonderlic was another red flag for the position. One scout described him as “lazy country” and “noncompetitive.”

Rasheed or Yosh would like nice over at RT. They just look like a starting RT.

Jenkins is the most dominant at LG.

Gute didn't draft 3 OL to not give them all a shot at winning the job at RT. Butkus, Steno, and LaFleur will get a good look at all 3 rooks at RT before a decision is made at the position.

Rhyan and Tom can play tackle and will get a chance, but they are guards at the end of the day. Yes, Tom has the ability to play all five positions. So does Elgton, but it doesn't mean that Elgton isn't naturally the best and most dominant at LG.

Just like Spriggs clearly looked like a LT, so he should of been given a chance to start at LT over Bakhatari.... (NOT).

I don't give two shits how they look, because how they play is what matters.

Tom and Elgton can play every position on the line. Elgton was very good at LT, but not as dominant as he is at LG. It is just his most natural position, and where he has dominated. Nothing to do with how he looks.

As I said, all 3 of Tom, Rhyan, and Walker will be given a chance to win the RT spot this summer. Let's see how it plays out. In the end, I feel Yosh will win the job, and Tom and Rhyan will become valuable depth at multiple positions. Both will also be very much in the mix to make RG theirs. I think Runyan or Newman ends up starting there.

I know you have Elgton missing at least 6 weeks of the season. Myself, and the Packers medical staff, have no reason to believe that is certain.

Should be a fun summer and early fall watching the OL develop. One thing I know, no matter who starts, there will be injuries at some point. Great depth to make sure the offense doesn't miss a beat.

Just to be clear, as for the too small thing... that part was not directed at you, but in general to the greater NFL fan draft scouting community (or people like me that like to pretend to be an offseason scout), talking about how Bakhtiari had to move inside in the NFL because he's too small, and same with Tom whom is basically is the exact situation at Bakhtiari in terms of style of play and body type. The too small wasn't directed at you...

But you say two people just looked like RT and that two others are just OGs at the end of the day...

Though, to be honest, I'm with you as far as Rhyan, I feel like he should be at OG from day 1 and could be a very long term starter there. Rhyan has the OT like skills, but he's just not quite quick enough for the NFL, and got a lot of false start penalties which I think/hope were just because he was worried about the speed rush, and moving him to OG with automatically help that. Plus while media and media scouts seriously over do it with the arm reach, Rhyan's arm length is even shorter than what they'd consider too short for OT. Of course, there is always Mark Tausher... who for an OT had T-Rex arms... Rhyan's arms are basically the same as Tausher, so not saying it's impossible, but Tausher is more the exception to the rule and back in Tausher's day, the best pass rusher would more often stay against the LT, where in todays NFL the best pass rusher test both sides.

I've thought if they know Jenkins is going to start the season on the PUP, they should consider starting the OL with
Bakhtari, Rhyan, Myers, Runyan, Nijman ... letting Newman compete on the right side and Tom on the Left and Center.
Then whenever Jenkins gets healthy, he can focus on the right side taking one of those starting spots. And I agree with you, Jenkins can be an all-pro OG, where he's not necessarily an all-pro OT.

So I mostly agree with you, (other than I think Jenkins will start the season on PUP and Tom is an OG). Personally I feel like LT or C will be Tom's best spots. I think his weakness is in the run game.

What about Tom makes you feel he struggles in the run game? I know you have implied Bakhtiari struggles as well, but I wouldn't use words like "struggle" for Bakh's run blocking. The reason I use it here is because you have in the past.
