Davante Adams gets every headline, but Allen Lazard is approaching career highs in every major receiving category. Davante Adams casts a long shadow in Green Bay. Or maybe it’s the opposite: his star shines so brightly it downs out all lesser lights.
Amid another historic season from Adams, it can be easy to forget the Packers ’ other passing game contributors. But toiling away in relative obscurity (outside Green Bay, at least), Allen Lazard is having the best season of his still-young career.
Lazard is at the cusp of career highs in catches and yards and has already set a new career-best in touchdowns this season. His six catches for 72 yards and a score on Sunday night represented the second time in a month that he’s had at least half a dozen grabs, 70 yards, and a touchdown, and he’s arguably just capped the best four-week stretch of his career.
Statistically, he’s only been better in Weeks 1-3 of the 2020 season, a three-game run in which he caught 13 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns. That effort was largely powered by a monstrous 146-yard night against New Orleans, a game which proved to be costly as a core muscle injury sustained therein sidelined Lazard for nearly two months.
After his performance against the Vikings, Lazard has now caught 16 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns over the past four weeks. But more importantly, he’s established himself as a reliable second option alongside Adams. With Randall Cobb on the shelf with his own core injury and Marquez Valdes-Scantling alternately battling a sore back and COVID-19, Lazard has consistently posted the second-most snaps among Packers wide receivers.
Best of all, Lazard’s skill set is complementary to just about every other pass catcher on the roster. He can ably line up in the slot, outside, or as a quasi-tight end. He can block (and block well) when asked, make a tough catch up the seam, or fight off a smaller defensive back. He’ll even moonlight as a ball carrier on a jet sweep from time to time. He’s increasingly hard to get off the field — a great problem to have as the Packers’ wide receiver room seems to be headed back toward full health.
Even if he’s never a true game-breaking talent at the position, Lazard wrings everything he can out of the skills he has, and he’s carving out a solid season amidst the astonishing excellence that is Davante Adams.

I hope Lazard continues to improve but it is funny to anoint either The Lizard King or MVS as the "# 2" receiver. Stats to follow.

I remember people telling us that MVS was emerging as the #2. That was last year.

Looking at their stats shows there is very little difference between them. They do differnt things and are both useful. Some game match ups will allow Lazard will get the focus and other games it will be MVS.

2019 Targets receptions yards TDs
Lazard 52/35/477/3
MVS 56/26/452/2

2020
Lazard 46/33/451/3
MVS 63/33/690/6

2021
Lazard 54/35/438/6
MVS 54/26/430/3

I don't see one of them breaking out and becoming the #2. I see complementary players who serve the team equally.

Yeah the #2 in this scheme is the RBs...

Also I think the OL being injured and them adjusting to get the ball out quicker as a result has hurt MVS chances of getting the ball more on deep routes.

Honestly I think it's good for the team, as once in a while you would randomly see him take three deep shots and it'd be like a coin flip of either a big play happening or time to kick.

I think playing small ball help the team, but it's hurt MVS maximum his potential... Of course that might just mean it's easier and cheaper to resign him, maybe. So you can't resign everyone... And if he's going elsewhere maybe that means a lower comp pick for him which stinks.

Lazard's opportunities are going to be much closer to the LOS. Slants or crossing routes that are easier for Rodgers to lead him and more catchable.

The more I'm looking at the stats the Packers receiving teirs this year has been like

Tier 1: Davante Adams
Tier 2: Davante Adams
Tier 3: Cobb & the RBs
Tier 4: M.V.S. & Lazard
Tier 5:The rest of them

I still maintain that the media has exaggerated Lazard's impact this year. Yes, he's made some decent catches, but he failed to haul in a shocking number of on-the-money and contested catches. His numbers don't look bad, but I hardly think he was a significant game changer. None of this is new, of course. Second-tier receivers have long been oddly placed on a pedestal in Green Bay, and I'm never sure why. They're pretty much a dime a dozen, particularly with Rodgers in the backfield.
