WEAU

Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, sports leagues around the country came to a halt.

When the National Football League resumed play two weeks after 9/11, the first Monday Night game was held in Green Bay.

On perhaps the most emotional night in the history of Lambeau Field, two people took center stage, surrounded by fans who shared their same emotions.

“It was an event that everyone took part in, the energy of the stadium, even remembering now, 20 years later, it’s still a special moment,” recalls Chris Gizzi, the Packers Strength Coach.

In 2001, Gizzi was a linebacker for the Green and Gold and a member of the U.S, Air Force Reserve.

On the morning of September 11th, he remembers feeling torn between team and country.

“One of the first people I was on the phone with was my reporting officer back in Colorado Springs and he was very clear, continue the mission, continue what you’ve been assigned to do, do your job and I think that gave me a lot of resolve to keep going forth as my role with the Packers, but also as a public relations officer, so making sure we tell the story and make sure that people believe in what we do defending the country,” says Gizzi.

A few days before the Packers retook the field, in front of the nation on a Monday night against Washington, Gizzi was notified of an unexpected honor.

“It was Coach Sherman’s idea, he presented it to me at the end of the week, I didn’t know exactly, what exactly he wanted, but the way it worked out, I think the fans are as responsible for that as anything too,” says Gizzi.

To a thunderous ovation, Gizzi led his teammates onto the field carrying an American flag.

“It was about as electric as I’ve ever seen the stadium, I got carried across that field, it was a group effort, it was awesome to be part of something bigger than yourself,” says Gizzi.

Just moments after the Packers dramatic entrance, we talked with country music star Martina McBride, invited to Green Bay by the NFL

“It’s such an honor to be asked to sing the anthem anytime, but especially since the events of a couple weeks ago,” said McBride in 2001.

20 years later, McBride says she still remembers that night vividly, as one of the most powerful moments of her life.

“We were all still so raw and so in shock as a nation and to be asked there was such an honor for me and as I started singing the whole crowd was chanting USA, USA and then they all started singing along. Honestly, after 9/11, I’ve sang the National Anthem all my life, we all have right, from kindergarten on, but after 9/11 was the first time, and maybe even at Lambeau Field was the first time, that I really understood the weight of those lyrics and they just took on a whole new meaning,” recalls McBride, before adding, “It was a powerful moment man, I go back and watch the video every once in awhile.”

Those at Lambeau Field that night will tell you the patriotic pregame ceremony even trumped the Packers victory, a night McBride calls the highlight of her career.

“It’s the top moment, just because it was so special and it also endeared me to Green Bay forever and ever,” says McBride.

My wife and I were there that night. They were still remodeling the stadium and security was insane. It tool us an hour or more just to get inside. The Packers did the best they could it was more than hectic.

We all went insane when Gizzi ran on to the field holding the flag with only one hand.

My wife cried as Martina sang. She didn't mean a thing to me. My wife and daughter tried to talk on the phone. They ended up texting back and forth. I still remember the chants "USA, USA!"

It was supposed to be a close game. Naw. Green Bay destroyed the Washington Footballs.

Zero2Cool (36m) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (36m) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (51m) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (53m) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (54m) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (54m) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (54m) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (58m) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (58m) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (59m) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (59m) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (1h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (1h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (1h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (1h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (1h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (1h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (1h) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (1h) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (1h) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (1h) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (1h) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (1h) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (1h) : Packers will get in
beast (1h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (1h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (1h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (3h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (4h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (4h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (4h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (5h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (14h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (15h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (18h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
