Just to make things slightly easier, if it's even close to a tie... the 2021 draft pick gets the tie breaker. Also in 2020 the Packers seemed to put an especial emphasis on Special Teams for the last spot at a number of positions, so if you're surprised someone isn't there, the notes might talk about Special Teams.

UDFA to watch: OL Dietzen

Because of depth, went light at QB and heavy at TE

RB: The last RB spot is WIDE OPEN... anyone's guess at this point.

I'm thinking one of the last WRs, HB or TE could be released to keep WR Taylor for ST reasons... I've been least impressed with Sternberger. But 7 WRs is A LOT... then again with their size, can St. Brown and/or Funchess help fill in as a receiving TE? Then again, how is Funchess going to be after basically missing two seasons, and does he know the playbook and get chemistry with the QB?

Based on how the Packers front office talked after the draft nights, I'm getting the feeling Gute is hoping the coaches give Myers a shot to win the starting Center job and they have top back-ups behind Jenkins and Turner as they're versatile gives them a chance to move where ever they might be needed. Though generally I'm thinking Jenkins back-ups LT and OC with Runyan filling in at LG... and Newman backing up RT and OG.

Nijman and Van Lanen battle for the practice back-up LT spot. If Nijman loses he could be gone... but right now, he should be more developed than the late round picks, so I keep him over the other OL options... and I think Van Lanen has both more versatility and upside than the other OL options. Defense System Talk
First off, we don't completely know what system we're running but almost everyone is expecting something like the Rams did last year. I'm putting this mock roster in a nickel defense (3-3-5) set-up as both the Packers and Rams ran "Base" defense 20% of less of the time last year . And because the Packers in 2020 and and Rams in 2019 both ran majority out of dime (2-4-6) . But I'll be more conservative and assume the dime was based on lack of personal issues only and hopefully we won't have that issue this year.

UDFA to watch: S Uphoff

Currently I have it set-up so Clark is in the 3 tech pass rushing role which they've been trying to get him in ever since losing DT Daniels. While Lowry is in a 5 tech role, where he's more being asked to defend the run and hold the edge. Usually the 5 tech role needs some length as they have to deal with OTs more often than others spots.

Clark is probably going to be moving all around depending on match-ups favorable match-ups or what they want to do on a certain play, certainly bouncing between NT and 3DE at least. Likewise Slaton could be bouncing between NT and 5DE as he has the length and run stopping skills. I'm also interested in seeing how much or little Z. Smith (or Gary) might be asked to bounce inside, I'm guessing little unless they're in a 4 man front.

Rams seemed to run their nickel defense by keeping the 3 DL front and 2 edge rushers but taking off an ILBer for a CB. Since our ILBers seem like the weakest group, that seems smart. Though we keep depth at ILB due to STs. Burks and Summers led the Packers in ST snaps. Though if we do run this nickel, I might suggest we release another ILB and keep another DB (Jackson?) as they could use more depth with nickel and dime defenses and based is ran so little.

CB was a bit tough but the Packers seemed to get tough on guys having to play STs last year... and the new 5th round draft pick did a good bit in college. And when looking at least year... Jackson was higher in the DB order than Hollman, but towards the end of the year... Jackson was healthy scratched benched while Hollman kept playing. Of course, later on so was Hollman... but they had Hollman playing due to ST longer than Jackson. Plus I remember our own Zero2Cool reporting from some source that Josh Jackson would be gone... that might be true still.

Slot: Keep an eye on the slot role... the new defensive coordinator Joe Barry has sort of signaled the slot is a very important role in this scheme, which had some in the media asking if Alexander would be placed there and Barry's reaction seemed to be, trying to cool off the media's jets about the idea of moving Alexander. Gute traditionally has sited that Savage can play the slot a lot... though if we were going that round, it would of been nice to upgrade the Safety depth, as we don't want Redmond starting. Both rookie draft picks have some experience in the slot role.[/list]

Alright, in reality, Fortunato probably has no chance... but I just really liked his story and I really hope that he finally gets a shot at a training camp and gets to put some snaps on live preseason game film, at minimum.[/list]

RB: Of those the 3rd RB is wide open.

WR Taylor could be the ST ace of the WRs, and I wanted to put Taylor on for ST reasons, I just didn't known whom to release for him... Funchess? St. Brown? Dafney? Sternberger? All of which are more helpful for the offense this year than Taylor.

DL: I was considering going with one less ILB and one more DL, but with the Sal's verstility and the fact Z. Smith and Gary could play some small DL in pass rush packages I leaded away from it (also the DBs could use the depth more if we're playing a lot of 6 DB packages)

Delontae Scott: I was SO excited when we got him as an UDFA, as he was playing undersized 3-4 DE in college, but his talent screamed 3-4 OLB to me and I thought we'd switch his position to get him out on the edge, but everything I've seen so far, they've kept the DL label on him and reporters haven't written an article about him switching so I've been disappointed. I think he's built like Preston Smith, and I'm not sure that's going to work out as an interior DL.

LB Tipa Galeai: One trick pony in college, extremely quick speed rushers with good length but basically absolutely no power if an OL could keep up with his quickness. Packers seemed to like him, calling up early from the PS for STs and he potential could benefit most from scheme switching, if they ask one of the OLBers to do less 4-3 Edge work and more 4-3 OLB like work, which at times the Rams did, dropping one OLB off into short zone coverage on the WRs with run stopping duties in that zone as well. Might get Galeai a bit further away from the physical OL and more to use his elite quickness.

CB: Packers seemed to like Ento over Samuels last year.

Oh yeah, well you said "some UDFA" not Coy Cronk specifically lol. But yes, Coy Cronk and Jon Dietzen might of been draft if they didn't have any injuries and both had multiple injuries which probably scared teams off.

But the last spot at RB and the last two spots at OL could be a WIDE open race with lots of guys on the bubble battling for them and could have some surprises there. One other one where there MIGHT be an open race with multiple guys is the last spots at OLB. I think most of the other battles the bubble is limited to a few people whom might challenge for it.

I think I plugged one or two UDFA in my official 53 that will be exactly precisely perfect on gameday.

Good analysis overall, but I like Dexter Williams and Josh Jackson to take that step!

RB Dexter Williams looked absolutely horrible reading his blocks last year... the key to stopping him was simple, don't let him get outside the OTs... because between the OL he couldn't read blocks And find the hole unless the hole slapped him up side the head straight forward. Gave me nightmares of RB Alex Green again.

The idea of a pass rush group with a front of Gary, Keke, Clark, Z. Smith and P. Smith excites me so much! One of them is gonna win and quickly! You might have to take an ILB off the field for it, and ask a SS to be more willing to attack the under routes, and a bit more risk over the top, but I think it'd be worth it a major of the times for a 3rd down pass rush group!

I look at Sternberger becoming a player too. Of the three, he's the most likely. Sternberger, Jackson then Williams. I'm more hopeful than certain on Williams lol

After 1st Preseason Game, Beasts 53 man mock roster

Note: Bakhtiari is on the PUP list and Sternberger is on the suspended list.

Only 23 offense players, which is certainly less than I normally prefer, with going light at 9th OL and 3rd QB spots. Of course, Bakhtiari and Sternberger could be back this season, which could get it back up to 24 or 25.

Potential Trades: I could see Gute shopping for offers for WR Funchess and OG Patrick. Not saying he pulls the trigger, but at least takes offers. Those positions have so much depth and because that explains why they're using Funchess in preseason so much, also Packers have shown they want depth guys to play STs and normally Funchess doesn't. Also the Packers are trying to work Runyan and a couple of others as a back-up Center so much despite Jenkins and Patrick able to play that role already, team that's three deep at Center is normally not seemingly trying hard to get a lot more guys for that role, so Jenkins might be taken by OT spot and my theory is Patrick could potentially be trade bait, which is why they're working on getting Runyan snapping to be better, so he can be the long term back-up Center as well.

Top 5 to just miss the list: QB Benkert, RB Taylor, WR Taylor, OT Nijman, OG Van Lanen

UDFA to watch: RB Taylor (technically he's not a rookie, but he wasn't healthy last year... and he has a potential shot of making the roster).

I'm thinking the Packers want WR Taylor to make it for STs again... but right not is currently being out played by Funchess and will probably go with Funchess unless they can get a trade offer for him they like.

I don't like going light on OL with only 8... but Bakhtiari is on the PUP and I don't necessarily think he'll take an OL out when he joins the roster. Also my next up guy up is Nijman, which he's what 3rd or 4th OT and so far looks too underdeveloped for this being his 3rd year. And I'm hoping they can sneak the rest of the OL depth that they want to the PS.

27 defenders made it, which is a bit heavy, especially with the 6 DL and 10 LBers, that's probably a bit too much, but I just couldn't give up on the potential of DL Heflin and LB Martin yet as they seem to be the bottom of their positions, but have upside potential to be more. I certainly would like to go with only 4 ILBers, but the team seem to like Burks and Summers for STs... so I'm thinking the next release would come between DL Lancaster, DL Heflin, OLB Galeai, ILB Summers and ILB Martin.

Top 5 to just miss the list: CB Jackson, CB Hollman, LB McDuffie, S Gaines, S Uphoff

UDFA to watch: DL Heflin, S Gaines, S Uphoff... Heflin is holding his own more than most interior rookies. Gaines and Uphoff show good instincts. Whomever is scouting these Safeties is doing a great job! Which we could scout CBs better!

CB Ento won one of the final roster spot over other CBs due to better usage in STs... where Jackson and Hollman struggled last year.
