Packers exercise fifth-year option on All-Pro CB Jaire Alexander

A formality is now official.

The Green Bay Packers exercised the fifth-year option on cornerback Jaire Alexander, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

The option is worth just under $13.3 million in 2022. Alexander, 24, will earn a base salary of $2.1 million in 2021.

The 18th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Alexander has ascended to the elite tier of NFL cornerbacks over his first three seasons. He was named a second-team All-Pro and first-time Pro Bowler in 2020.

Alexander was the highest-graded cornerback at Pro Football Focus last season.

The option ensures Alexander is under contract with the Packers for at least the next two seasons. The Packers could approach Alexander about a long-term extension at some point before or during the 2022 season.

Lost in the Draft hype and the Rodgers kerfuffle is that Green Bay exercised the fifth year option on Jaire Alexander. I know money is gonna be tight but no way can they let Alexander get away after his rookie contract runs out. Alexander has some serious potential to be one of the best players in team history.

I'm excited about Jaire Alexander. I think once Eric Stokes lines up on the field with him, we're going to find out just how good he really can be!

Actually I only hit clicked the post button once. The screen went to one of the error pages I get when you are doing an update or the website is down. I selected F5 to refresh the screen and had the same site down screen so I used the back arrow key and when I got back to the thread page I F5 again and saw the post was there twice. Not my doing. 🤭

I'm very high on Alexander! I actually purchased some of his rookie cards online a few months ago even though I haven't collected cards in years just because I think he's a special player.
