Super fast but can't tackle. Eh. Kind of typical for a lot of CBs.
Ok pick. Fits a desperate need. King will begin the season as the starter but Stokes will take over the gig before the playoffs. As the CB2 he should work out fine. He's better in zone than man but GB plays zone so not so much of an issue. Some of his weaknesses will be mitigated by coaching.
With his speed and (hopefully) elusiveness, might see him return punts.

And Moore was the better pick, sorry. Gute sucks at firat round drafts and it looks like that trend will continue

  • Jaire Alexander - pro bowler, likely future All-Pro, and Gute picked up an extra 1st round pick by trading back - the only player with 3 years of experience that can get a traditional grade gets an easy A+
  • Rashan Gary - has been stuck behind two very good veterans, but came on in 2020, and still has the potential to be a good-great player
  • Darnell Savage - one of the better young safeties in the league, potential for pro-bowl/all-pro type status in the next few years
  • Jordan Love - hasn't played a snap, nobody can grade him yet
  • Eric Stokes - hasn't played a snap, nobody can grade him yet[/list]

  • Of the players that can reasonably be graded, Gary has been the "worst" pick. And Gary sure as hell is no Justin Harrell.

Gute drafts athletes who can also play some football. Taking that into consideration, Stokes is the perfect pick. Just like Gary, Savage and Love were. I guess it can work. You can generally coach up athletes, but you can't make a Wes Welker run much faster than a 4.65. I don't think we'll ever see a Bryan Bulaga type pick under Gute; high floor but low ceiling.

It's the polar opposite of what the Pats have been doing to great succes, though, and I can imagine you run into a lot more busts when you're only drafting boom-or-bust guys in the 1st round. Then again, if just two of your five picks pan out, you've got two superstars on your roster if they reach their ceiling.

On topic... I like the pick. A lot. His weak points seem relatively easy to fix by just experience and coaching or don't matter that much... I like my corner being able to tackle, but I like him to be good in coverage a whole lot more. His upside is ridiculous. Can't wait to see him in action. Maybe not so much this year, but in a year or two.

I don't think Gutey has been given enough credit for the job he has done in the last few years. His challenge has been to build a respectable D while also bringing in the type of players ML needs for the O to succeed. It may seem like he falls short by drafting H Backs and RB's and holding on to ancient TE's or not finding more talented WR's then guys like Lazard (guys that actually enjoy blocking).
All Gute has done is build a team that is built perfectly for a play action offense that, DARE I say this, HELPS Aaron Rodgers greatly.
Still, the talking heads prefer the storyline that Gute has not done enough for Arod by pointing out the fact he hasn't drafted a sideline full of WR's that run 4.2 forties. All you have to do is go back a few years and recall the scowling, hands on the hips, mouthing the "F" word, player that was the QB of the Green Bay Packers. Oh Yeah, I remember
that guy now, that was AARON RODGERS!!!
All these steps forward. All these pieces added. All these wins.
    For What?
What a shame I have to even ask that question. Gute's not perfect but at least he's still working at it and not giving up. More than I can say about others hanging out with their Malibu crowd drinking Chardonnay and smoking cubans pretending California is still paradise coming up with cute catch phrases like "Beautiful Mystery."
Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.
