PFW 2007

DT Brian Soi, Utah State, #54
(6-2, 320, 5.1 E) Recorded 26 sacks over his final two high school seasons and was highly recruited. Signed with Brigham Young in 2003 but spent the year at Hargrave Military Academy to address his academics. Transferred to Utah State and redshirted in 04 with continued academic concerns. Started 9-of-11 games in 05, compiling 31 tackles, 7 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Did not return in 06 due to academics and was to be ineligible for the 07 season. Blessed with natural size, strength and athletic ability and looks the part. Has been very durable. Can dig a hole in the ground to stop the run and hold two gaps. Is tightly wound and relies too much on his upper-body strength. Needs to play in a simple scheme and be turned loose to be effective. If he ever figures it out, he could make a roster.

According to PFT this am, the Dolphins are probably targeting Brace at 25, at least that is my interpretation of what was posted. This kid is a Dolphin cast-off. Not a very good sign. Their need is pretty strong for a NT (pretty much like everyone's, it seems, the existing all seem to be getting old and/or suck for the existing teams running the 3-4 and/or hybrids.)

I went into the Green Bay Packer Gazette chat with Tom Pelissero (SP?) yesterday, specifically to ask about what I perceive as our "situation" at NT. I did not go on my rant there, but rather asked a practical question that I have interspersed with my various rants here.

I asked him about Fred Bledsoe and his 20+ weight gain this off-season. The motherf##ker didn't answer my question (OK, re-ranting, here, lol) Instead, he said a couple of things. He said that he would be very surprised if Fred Bledsoe was a Green Bay Packer this year. (I GUESS that's an answer, grrrrr...) You can tell it's me asking, because I'm so whipped into a froth I cannot spell anymore, lol

Tom Pelissero:

Prediction: Fred Bledsoe will not be on the roster. Ryan Pickett, the projected starter, is about to turn 30 and is in a contract year. Again, reasons I can't believe more people aren't calling NT the Packers' biggest need.

In a subsequent post, I asked him this:

Crabtree, Sanchez, Oher and Raji available at 9. Who do you take?

He took Raji, and thought I was nuts for throwing Sanchez into the mix, citing the 15 mil commitment. I posted back that he had stated "BPA" in response to another poster, and threw Sanchez into the mix to sort of "test" his commitment to that.

My response was not published, however.

GBPG Chat

I still think that if the opportunity arises for a trade back scenario, we should leap on it. I am taking into consideration all the pluses and minuses of passing on an "impact player", the nuances of BPA vs. need, etc. All I know is that our best shot at significant improvement for 2009 is to be able to block better, tackle better and pressure/sack the quarterback better. Pretty much the way it has always been, without the hype.

NT remains my personal #1 priority in this draft. That is not the same as saying it is my first pick. I am saying that the solution could easily involve using that #1 pick on Raji, but that is different...I think we need another early round pick in order to balance out the reach factor required to solve this problem.

The argument is made that we can get a suitable big body later in the draft. I have looked into this more than a little. If anything, the competition is going to get stiffer for those types of picks...so many teams are in the market for so few players at the position.

We need an NT, a DE, an OT and an OLB, at a minimum. These need to be able to play for us way sooner than later, imo, or we are in continued rebuilding mode...you can call it - not rebuilding, but restocking--whatever---see part about blocking and tackling and stuff.

Samoan is ALWAYS good, btw.

The only thing better is TONGA

As I said a long time ago, when I asked a Samoan friend why the Samoans are so huge...

His reply (mind you he goes about 380-420 lbs)--

"Yo, brah, you got da puka in da brain you tink we big... My cous'is in da Tonga are-- dem big boys...dey scare me brah."

Instead of Ted fartin' around with some back-up Duke BBall player, he oughta take his show on a little "vacation" to the land of the behemoths...imo :thumbleft:

I think with the uncertainty of the draft they should get all feasible NTs into camp and keep the best. We only have one, well now two, possible players right now.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?

I do like this guys size. It would be great if he would be the second coming of the Grave Digger at NT.

I'm just thrilled we're not rolling into Spring with 1 NT.

Hey im not sure if this was posted at all..

but according to Packers.COM we signed a NT out of Utah State

http://packers.com/news/releases/2009/04/14/3/

The Green Bay Packers have signed free agent nose tackle Brian Soi. The signing was announced Tuesday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Soi, a 6-foot-3, 334-pound first-year player from Utah State, signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2007 with the Miami Dolphins and was released prior to the regular season. He also spent time with the New York Giants during the 2008 offseason.

Soi will wear No. 62.

I dont use packers.com as a main source of offseason information..it's not the quickest place to get the information.. like when we signed Anthony Smith (not a big deal) it wasn't posted on the site until a couple days after. However, I couldn't find this signing under Google News.. where I speculate all the rumors 🙂

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
