Report: Packers hiring Jerry Gray to coach secondary

Posted by Darin Gantt on January 28, 2020, 2:19 PM EST

The Packers moved quickly to hire a new defensive backs coach.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Packers are hiring former Vikings secondary coach Jerry Gray for the same job on his staff.

Gray will replace Jason Simmons, who left to take the same job for the Panthers.

Gray spent the last six years with the Vikings, and has been defensive coordinator with the Titans and Bills. He spent nine years in the league as a player with the Rams, Oilers, and Buccaneers.

Darin Gantt wrote:

The Vikings have fielded some phenomenal defensive backs in recent years, but it remains to be seen whether there's enough raw material in Green Bay for Jerry Gray to produce a lockdown secondary week in and week out.

Perry could be a big help in our division since he spent six years coaching the Vikings secondary.
He should know his way around the division pretty swell.

Jerry gray has been with Vikings since 2014 season serving as a defensive backs coach under Zimmer. Here are some players that have seen recent success under Gray:

Xavier Rhodes: 3 times Pro-Bowl
Harrison Smith: 5 times Pro-Bowl
Anthony Harris: Tied league in 2019 for most interceptions “6”.

Can see how he could help the young studs groom into potential pro-bowl caliber players.

So how did we end up with this guy? Was he no longer under contract with Minnesota? If not, how come?

Here's to hoping he can save josh Jackson and get some development out of Kevin king and the extremely disappointing jaire Alexander.

Not saying he isn't a good player, I think I just expected him to make a 2nd year jump and become a top corner in the league. Instead he looked good for the first 4 weeks of the year and then spent the rest of the year getting burned over and over. He was humiliated by Amari Cooper and was never the same.

Boy do we have exceedingly high standards. It leads to a lot of disappointments.

Here is what PFF has to say about JA. They rank him as the 11th best CB.

11. JAIRE ALEXANDER, GREEN BAY PACKERS
At just 22 years old, Jaire Alexander is one of the youngest players on PFF’s top-25 list. He excels in both man and zone coverage from both press and off-man alignments, and despite spending 36% of his 608 coverage snaps in press coverage on the line of scrimmage, Alexander allowed the third–lowest completion percentage (56.1%) and recorded the second-best forced incompletion percentage (20.4%) among cornerbacks who saw at least 90 targets over the course of the season.

Even though he has a smaller frame than Gilmore and Sherman, the 5-foot-10 Alexander typically draws the difficult assignment of covering the opponents’ No. 1 wide receiver. However, he still allowed only an 87.8 passer rating (41st among corners, one spot above Casey Hayward) and broke up 13 of the 98 passes that were thrown his way. As experience contributes to his development, Alexander is sure to remain a fixture among the top players at his position.

PFF  wrote:

He has the 3rd lowest completion percentage at 56.1%. That means like it or not the majority of passes thrown will be completed. Looking at one play or one game isn't taking into account the full body of work on the season. And it doesn't take into consideration the 100 or more plays where the pass didn't get thrown his way.

Fan Shout
packerfanoutwest (5h) : Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst says Green Bay’s roster can win, even without adding anyone in the draft.
Zero2Cool (5h) : It's a poor design. New site has SignalR like our gameday chat

wpr (6h) : now 3
Zero2Cool (7h) : Who? What?
beast (15h) : What is he supposed to say? He doesn't want players currently on the team?
Martha Careful (20h) : meh
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Sounds like Walker and Wyatt will be with Packers for beyond 2026
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : It's so awesome.

wpr (21-Apr) : Only 4
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : If only we had a topic to read about and discuss it. That's something new website must have!!!
dfosterf (21-Apr) : Justice Musqueda over at Acme Packing put up an excellent synopsis of the Packers 1st round options this am
wpr (19-Apr) : 5 days
beast (18-Apr) : 6 days
wpr (17-Apr) : 7 days
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
