I think they have to give him another year at the position he was drafted to play since it was accepted that he would need time to develop. The only thing that makes any sense about this pick is after shedding Clay and Nick and bringing in the Smith's is allowed Gary some time to develop. The mystery of this pick is they really didn't need Gary or to gamble at that position at all. Gute made the moves that could have allowed them to get a developmental player later in the draft.

I'm not sure Gary is even all that bad considering he was playing behind guys who were having career years. Did he not play more because he was such a liability or because your going to play the best players most of the time? It's not like the position Sternberger was in who got more and more PT and got better and better. After all, TE was opposite on the scale of productivity vs OLB throughout the year allowing a bit more opportunity for him. He, in fact, is my year 2 player candidate that makes the biggest leap.
Gary is going to have to claw and scratch his way to more playing time and that's not a bad thing and I'm not ready to say he's not up to it just yet. As mentioned in other posts guys like Collins, Arod, and Adams, took time to realize and meet their potential. What attributes do they all have in common? They were all naturally gifted athletes that just kept working until their time came. Gary is as naturally gifted as they come. From all accounts Gary is not afraid to work so lets just give this a little more time before kicking the guy to the curb.

In addition, nobody but nobody expected the results from BOTH Smiths. He was a bit of an insurance policy. If one of the Smiths fell flat Gary would have been called upon to play more. If that had happened his numbers would have been better. There was the thought that if the Smiths didn't work out, Gute wouldn't have to keep them both for the entire 4 years and that means Gary would be ready in year 2 or 3 to step into the starting position.

I predict crow will be served next year when Gary puts up 5+ sacks with solid production as the #3 OLB. I don't think it will be as much crow as when Davante broke out in year 3 after "surviving the cut", but it'll be close enough.

Some kind of Cam Jordan cross with Za'darius sounds good to me.

5 Sacks would not constitute crow eating eligibility. Fackrell had 10 last year.

Given our shortcomings, how he played at Michigan, and his lack of playing time when it mattered, I think his highest and best use for the team are to try putting on weight and moving him inside.

I absolutely hope I am wrong....I am very often....I thought Burks was the steal of the draft...and he is a bust. We shall see.

I will happily eat crow if merited.

If he puts on muscle, I could see him at DE in base and inside in nickel and dime ala Mike Daniels.

If Gary is gonna copy any other player, it's gonna be Za'darius Smith, as skill set wise, they're the most similar and they're right there in front of each other... unlike Daniels or Peppers... plus Z and Gary are basically the perfect models of the physical types Petite looks for in this defense, guys that can do anything from outside edge speed rush, to stunt inside on a DT rush once in a while...

Only down side is that they can't cover, and can't used as a surprise drop into coverage nearly as often... but Petite seems to be alright with that in his scheme... and then there is always Preston Smith when he wants to...
