In this day and age, you can't have two ILBers that can't cover, or they'll just keep getting them in one on one match-ups and beat you all day that way (assuming they're playing smartly and have enough weapons), which is why it's hard to put Martinez and Goodson on the field at the same time for long periods of time. Though Goodson being Martinez replacement is interesting...
Yeah people complain that Martinez is athletically physically limited, which is true.... but has any player maximized the physical tools they do have any better than Martinez? He's average in so many ways... yet he barely makes any mistakes.
Remember this offseason and pre-season when Bears fans said they didn't really like S Amos, he's consistent but average... and they got the much much better player in Haha Clinton-Dix because he's more athletic and potentially can a lot more (which is true).
Martinez is that Amos, they're never going to be the most athletic or flashiest of players... but damn are they consistent, and damn good at what they do, making minimum mistakes, even if they won't be making too many highlight plays. We can find more athletic players, like we had with Haha, and we still have with Burks... but their inconsistent play, hurt that greater potential play they had.
I still say it depends on the money amount and the other options.... how much money will Martinez cost? Do coaches fell Goodson could replace Martinez at a much cheaper cost? Some other interesting potential FAs out there.... heck getting a player from the Bears worked once... now they got two good players at ILB going into FA in Danny Trevathan and Nick Kwiatkoski... no way they sign both. Also draft is an option.
There are many different options... I think Packers will sign a vet, weather Martinez or someone new. It all comes down to the money amounts and perceived value.
