Hmm, why not? I suppose this is a sign that the team is content enough with Goode at least for now although they'll still probably bring in some competition for him.

So we paid this guy about $80,000 last year for the privilege of trading him away . . . for a possible seventh-round pick . . . two years from now. I don't get it.

Goode is good so this is cool with me. I got a new nickname for Thompson...

Well what do you think? Yeah I know you all think it's awesome!

As someone pointed out, it is better than cutting him outright. Better to sell your old truck for $350 than give it away, I guess.

Well, he was going to be our starter until he got injured...

Why all the fuss about maybe getting some compensation for a guy that wasn't going to be on our roster?

I like getting compensation. It's just the "conditional" part that baffles me. There's a decent change that we won't get anything for him.

Then again, we wouldn't have gotten anything for him period if we had cut him outright, so I suppose this is a smart move overall. We need to bear in mind that teams will be rolling into training camp with only 80 roster slots, so now is the time to start trimming judiciously.

Yahoo stated it was a 2011 pick.

Packers trade long snapper Jansen to Panthers

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)The Green Bay Packers traded long snapper J.J. Jansen to Carolina on Monday for a conditional 2011 seventh-round draft pick, perhaps signaling the end of veteran Jason Kyles eight-year run in that position with the Panthers.

With the draft just around the corner and the frenzy of post draft free agent signings we have to get the roster count down. This year the number is at 80 only..

With this move it gets us to 67 players.. currently under contract.. and at the moment with 9 picks to add to the roster.. the leaves a grand total of 4 UDFA that can be signed.

Again can only bring 80 to camp... so it is more apparent why we didn't go nuts in pre-draft FA..

Let the draft shake out.. get into the post draft mini's and see where the roster shakes out.. then if need be.. add a seasoned veteran to an area of concern yet.

But looking at the roster  yesterday, there aren't that many "why are they on the roster" type players left that shouldn't be brought to camp in late summer.

So now we're worried about trading a long snapper? Something tells me the draft, Jennings and Collins need that attention more.

Worried? No. I was just puzzled by the way the trade was pushed so far out. I'm always a little surprised by conditional trades -- they seem like such a gamble.

In all likelihood, the Packers will receive no compensation as JJ Jansen probably won't make the Carolina team by 2010 (or 2011). I'm sure being on the team is one such condition in order for compensation to be paid, as well as some performance incentives probably. However, any remaining salary cap payments that the Packers owe should now shift to the Panthers. Or at least it better.

That was my thought. I view his chances of being on the active roster in 2011 as slim. And yes, he will have to play a certain (undisclosed) number of games for the Packers to receive the pick. But hey, if we free up a few extra cap dollars, I guess that's a positive.

As mentioned something is better than nothing. Last year's long snapper(Carolina's) hasn't been signed. The condition to the trade could be to simply make the roster for one game, who knows. Whatever happens I'm not going to lose much sleep over it.

I am sure the condition of the trade is if JJ is on the 53 man roster at the beginning of the season, we get that future 7th rounder..

http://blogs.charlotte.com/panthers/2009/04/byebye-jason-kyle.html

There are vague there, but it certainly sounds to be the case..

Wonder if they are feeling a little pressure yet to move Peppers.. and no I don't want him here at the cost in salary he will be demanding.. let alone shipping something valuable in return to the Panthers.

I like how alot of people are acting very degrading about a 7th round pick. We're getting rid off a player we would've cut and are going to get a 7th for him, if he'll play. That's a win-win situation.

Donald Driver, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Jay Rattlif and tons of solid starters who aren't pro-bowlers or big paid guys.

The chances aren't high, but it's better than nothing.

I am not being denigrating toward a seventh-round pick. I am commenting on the fact that the pick is conditional. All the Panthers have to do to avoid paying up is simply cut the guy.

I wonder if they could cut the guy and then re-sign him....would we still get the draft pick?
