Okay, before I start, a couple of presumptions..

1) Tauscher resigned.. I know that isn't actuate as of current, however for argument sake I put him on the roster but not in a starting capacity. If resigned he would probably start the season on IR.

2) Roster Spots and Starters are as of today date... if we had to assemble a opening day roster with what is currently available under contract or tender.

3) Grade scale is through last season, it is a loose scale based on productivity, age, potential and some grades were weighted due to changing positions.. IE.. Kampman a 3 instead of a 4.. due to learning a new position and a curve to picking it up.

Example of curve:
4 = A
3 = B
2.5 = C+ / B -
2 = C
1= D
No one gets an F.. ;)

4) Roster spot is would they make the team on paper today..

So with assembling a roster of 53 with a loose look at counts here is the breakdown of positions, roster position averages and starter averages..

Throw out your thoughts and disagreements with my grading and starting analysis... I know I am often incorrect.. so tell me how.. ;)

I did this to try an grade out the positions and see where the holes are using a roster grading system..

Quality depth at DE, NT and along the Oline is telling..

So I second my vote for boosting the talent level along the defensive lines with my analysis..

But I must admit, I need to study the grades once over again more thoroughly.. but most are pretty damn close I would guess.

You put alot of time into this - enjoyed reading it.

a few comments ...
- Al harris is my man and he deserves a 4 (nothing like plopping him on the best receiver of the other team and let him work em).

- IMO you give our LB core too high of a grade; ya perhaps kampman deserves a 3. But hawk and barnett (even thou barnett was awesome he is still not fully recovered (bit worried about him). Not that much lower then a 3 thou (perhaps I'm being nit picky).

- Collins def deserves a 4; well if he keeps up what he did last year; was right on the money.

- Not sure how to evaluate the Oline but do you think they deserve a 2.5? considering the amount of sacks they allowed?

rest looks good IMO

Dang Pack. I'm going through this list looking at a spot I can argue with you, and can't find anything.

A couple of slices of opinions on Harris..

1) He has struggled in zone in the past, seems uncomfortable in open space.. a trail type corner more so.

2) Age is creaping on him..

But is open for debate.

For as much crap as I give Barnett and especially Hawk, they are average to above average players overall.

Barnett has no business in the middle of a 4-3, let alone a 3-4.. I am worried where he will fit.. but he is a faster rangy linebacker that can cover sideline to sideline.. he just isn't stout at the point of attack.

Hawk.. this is more on what he should be verses what he has been.. he flashes the ability but the past season and a half he is way to reactionary.. call this a gut feel and confidence in the new defensive staff to get that potential out of him.. maybe a 2.5 is more appropriate.

- Collins def deserves a 4; well if he keeps up what he did last year; was right on the money.

IMO, to many mental lapses in angles and technique keep him from getting a higher grade, that coupled with he always seems to be nicked up weekly.. plays through it, but never seems to be fully healthy.. a wee bit concerning.

Hardest part of the roster to truly grade.. example Clifton.. on natural grass he performs much better than turf and fast surfaces.. on grass he is still well above average.. but is starting to really struggle with speed rushers..

Another is Colledge.. will he play guard or tackle.. at guard he gets nothing more than a C.. but at tackle where he will be able to use his natural playing stance.. I think he will show a heck of a lot more.. couple that with blitz pickups that will be easier to read.. we have a player that may finally see some of his potential.

Wells.. should be a backup.. Preston.. I read up on him, and I think he will be a solid player.. Spitz is probably our best overall player.. I hope they drop him in at the critical left guard spot and let him develop into a pro bowl type player. Sitton.. book is still way open on him... could go up could go down.. sophomore players are so damn hard to read.

I tried to remove my bias from the grading on the oline and give them a fair shake..

I liked it for the most part. I could nitpick if you want.. lol..

I think it'd knock Barnett and Hawk down to a 2.5

I'd put Rodgers as a 3. I've said my fair share of criticism before. I think he's a B player. Potential to be an A though.

Bishop should be about a 2. I can live with a 2.5. Based on potential, I like what I see, but he's really not done that much.

I like Wells over Preston. I actually think GB will look like this eventually on the offensive line

Clifton/Colledge/Spitz/Sitton/Draft Pick

I would rate all of them a 2.5, but Sitton whom I'd give a 2. Again, Sitton has potential.

I think Poppinga is a 2.5 as well as Ruvell Martin.

I thought you did a great job. I'd post this on the main page if I were you or if you can.

I'd also add an I for incomplete on there because some of these guys we just don't have enough to go off of. Pat Lee comes to mind as one of those players as does Kregg Lumpkin.

-I'd give the punter area a 1
For obvious reasons...

-The TE area a 2 not a 2.5
I don't feel like any of the players at that position have proven themselves to be a solid go to TE.

-Kicker would be a 3.5
Mason has been VERY good IMO and I'm sure in a lot of your opinions. He has done a very good job of replacing the sure footed Ryan Longwell.

-CB position a solid 3
We have 2 of the best in the business and I think great potential in waiting.

-OL I would give a 2
Veteran lineman getting old and looked to be declining this past year. Players not staying healthy and haven't proved to be consistent.

The areas I didn't address are the ones that I agree with.

Nice job on this. Great thread quality here.
