Can’t say I have the answer but I doubt that the returner is the issue with the Packers regularly returning the ball to behind the 25 yard line on kickoffs, even when the ball is say, kicked to the 7 or so. When nearly every team we face is consistently doing better than we are despite several different returners over the last couple years and this year in particular, that tells me there’s a much deeper problem than “guy who can’t run or find holes”.

I was kind of surprised to see Sheppard back off instead of fair catching the last punt. I'm not faulting him, but I just thought he would catch it where it landed to ensure no way we get pinned inside the five.

I can’t help but wonder, is he so scared of making another big mistake, that he won’t do what is needed (like fair catching that last punt) and he let the ball go past him.

We tend to think of these things situations as solely the returner's decision, and while there certainly is some element of decision making on Sheppard's part, it's possible that the ST coach told him not to field it unless it was clean (I didn't see the play so I don't know how close the Chiefs players were to him).

It's a little surprising to not see someone like Tramon Williams back there in that case. I seem to remember the occasional Tramon or Charles Woodson back to field punts in critical situations like this.
