Looking Back, here is what is left from the recent Ted Thompson Drafts:

2012: Daniels
2013: Bakhtiari
2014: D. Adams, Linsley
2015
2016: K. Clark, Spriggs, Fackrell, Martinez, Lowry, T. Davis
2017: King, J. Jones, M. Adams, J. Williams, A. Jones

Hardly an impressive array after 2014.

I took 3 teams that are pretty consistently good (and usually draft around the same ranger we do) and looked how many of their guys were still on the roster for every given year in the draft. Gave them the benefit of the doubt, as well, by adding UFA's like Brent Urban and Javorius Allen to the list of guys still on the roster, even though they technically aren't.

Baltimore Ravens - With Ozzie Newsome at the controls, they were often though of as one of the best drafting teams in the NFL.

2012 - X (0/8)
2013 - Brandon Williams (1/10)
2014 - Brent Urban (1/10)
2015 - Maxx Williams, Javorius Allen, Robert Myers (3/9)
2016 - Ronnie Staley, Tavon Young, Chris Moore, Alex Lewis, Willie Henry, Kenneth Dixon, Matt Judon, Maurice Canady (8/11)
2017 - Marlon Humphrey, Tyus Bowser, Chris Wormley, Tim Williams, Jermaine Eluemunor, Chuck Clark (6/7)

New England Patriots - They have a penchant for hitting on their picks in the later rounds, but not getting a whole lot out of their 1st rounders. Still a team that's considered good at (2nd and 3rd day) drafting.

2012 - Dont'a Hightower, Nate Ebner (2/7)
2013 - Duron Harmon (1/7)
2014 - James White (1/9)
2015 - Shaq Mason, Joe Cardona (2/11)
2016 - Joe Thuney, Elandon Roberts, Ted Karrs (3/9)
2017 - Derek Rivers, Deatrich Wise (2/4)

New Orleans Saints - Pretty succesfull on the back of Brees and Payton, but not know for drafting all that well. Tend to trade up a lot, not getting a lot of value in the later rounds.

2012 - X (0/5)
2013 - Terron Armstead (1/5)
2014 - X (0/6)
2015 - Andrus Peat, P.J. Williams, Tyeler Davison (3/9)
2016 - Sheldon Rankins, Michael Thomas, Vonn Bell, David Onyemata (4/5)
2017 - Marshon Lattimore, Ryan Ramczyk, Marcus Williams, Alvin Kamara, Alex Anzalone, Trey Hendrickson (6/7)

When compared to these teams, Ted didn't do all that bad a job. The 2015 draft, obviously, turned out horrible, but when compared the other drafts stack up pretty well. That's including 2016, in my opinion.

In 2016 we got one of the best NTs in the league late in the 1st, a guy who was very raw, but is coming alive in Fackrell and a tackling machine in Martinez.

2017 is a hard one to say anything conclusive about, but the RBs turned out good value picks and I still have hope for Jones. King showed us in 2017 that he has the skills. Just hoping that he'll get healthy and in form.

If anything, this shows that the drafting was never the problem. Getting the needed pieces on the team via free agency and trades was, as respectively the Saints and the Patriots have shown us.

Outside the top 15 picks, 2015 was kind of a shit draft all around, wasn't it?

I disagree with your conclusion.

The data points out the RECENT YEARS of TT's draft had been the problem AND (as RM pointed out):

Getting the needed pieces on the team via free agency and trades was [the problem.]

There are a couple of reasons that over 40% of roster players are rookies and UDFA's.

1. The salary cap , most teams have their franchise QB, then their 2nd salary players, very few 3rd salary players, then players on rookie contracts and udfa's.

2. About 50% of all draft picks end up out of the league within 2 years.

Ted's specialty was finding those late round and udfa players who ended up getting a 2nd contract.

I'll give you something to compare Thompson and Gutekunst .

Compare 2005 FA period to 2019(to this point, not over with yet).

I think you will see they resemble each other very much.

What draft picks that didn't pan out in 2015, Gutey traded or released.

He set this year up as to not to have to sign any current player to a 2nd contract.

His plan all along was to be able to hit FA hard, hopefully he hit big time!
All 4 guys were signed to what would have been 2nd contracts had they been with the same team since being drafted.

With the Packer players who will be FA's next year, I don't think he will be dipping into FA near as much.

Hopefully he hits a couple of home runs in this year's draft and he won't have to go looking to fill holes.

I don't care what Stats you are referencing, the name of the game is winning.
Cry me a river all you want about only 1 SB, Ted Thompson provided the coaches the players to win.

Ted hasnt drafted in 2 years, how many more years you going to blame him for 2 losing seasons he had nothing ro do with?

I like today's Tank McNamara comic. It applies to just about every team and nearly every year.
