Packers’ new defensive QC coaches have experience with top SEC programs

Christian Parker and Wendel Davis both worked for prestigious college football teams last year. The big news out of Green Bay on Friday was the official hiring of Shawn Mennenga as special teams coordinator. However, lost in that announcement was the news that the Packers had made three additional decisions regarding their coaching staff, with a pair of new faces coming aboard.
Wendel Davis and Christian Parker are the newest members of the team’s defensive coaching staff, as both were announced as defensive quality control coaches on Friday. Both individuals have experience coaching and playing defense at the college level, with their backgrounds coming at different positions on that side of the football. However, one common thread they share is the fact that they both worked in the SEC last season for teams that finished in the top 20 of the final polls.
Davis was a college linebacker, playing for the University of Arkansas in the late 2000s. In his four years, Davis totaled 164 tackles, 13 for losses, and added a sack and a pair of interceptions. After three years as a graduate assistant with the Georgia Bulldogs, who finished the 2018 season 11-3 and ranked seventh in the country, he recently took a job as the co-defensive coordinator at University of the Incarnate Word . However, the opportunity to work in Green Bay apparently was too good to pass up.
Parker’s background, meanwhile, is in the secondary. He spent the 2018 season as a “defensive analyst” at Texas A&M University under new head coach Jimbo Fisher, a role that appears similar to the QC coach position he will hold in Green Bay. A& went 9-4 in 2018, landing at 16th in the final AP poll of the year. After a four-year playing career at the University of Richmond , Parker coached defensive backs for four years at the Division II and FBS levels with Virginia State, Norfolk State , and William & Mary .
Both men will provide some additional youth to the coaching staff, and their experience with some of the best coaches in college football should only help the Packers moving forward.

It will help to have coaches who have been involved with SEC colleges. I can't help but feel that, while there are certainly talented players in all of the SEC colleges some of the players are more a product of the system that outstanding talent. They benefited from being alongside other skilled players and had a coaching staff who they could get the most of of them. It may be wrong but it seems as if more than a few SEC players that GB drafted, Alabama in particular, have not lived up to expectations.
