I think we shouldn't waste our time interviewing him. His stints in Denver and Indy were awful, and name one coach from the Pat's tree that's been successful.

By Tuesday afternoon, Robert and Jonathan Kraft, as well as Belichick, met with McDaniels again and made an aggressive pitch. McDaniels' conversation with Belichick had particular influence, a source said. Belichick wasn’t trying to talk McDaniels out of going, but he knew his offensive coordinator was having second thoughts.

Belichick offered to include McDaniels on more of the inner workings of the organization, from roster construction to financial/salary-cap related considerations. That was viewed as “extremely valuable” to McDaniels. Ownership also endorsed it as a way to extend Belichick’s influence on the organization in future years, although no assurances were given to McDaniels that he would succeed Belichick. McDaniels, who a source confirmed got a significant raise, has privately said in the past that he did not want to be the coach who succeeds Belichick. Although he since may have changed his mind, McDaniels knows Belichick, after five Super Bowl victories, will be a hard act to follow.

Beyond financial and professional stability, McDaniels also was thinking of his family. He wanted a long-term commitment from the Patriots so his four children, ages 12 to 3, would be able to attend the same schools over the next several years. The transient life of a coach doesn’t always make that possible.

One source said: “He’s always just insisted that everything be right, or he wasn’t going to leave.” It’s unclear what it was about the Colts' job that McDaniels ultimately decided wasn’t perfect, but he reached a point where he believed he was better off staying in New England.



I thought it to be strange that factors like his kids attending the same school are mentioned, yet, he's out there interviewing left and right now. There's a bit in there about lessonslearned.xls that sounds like complete BS to me, as well.

I think that he's shown that he can do it from a pure football and strategist perspective, but between the clashes in Denver, the backing out of that Colts job and his rather unique character, I don't know if he's the guy you want running a big part of the organization. As an OC, I'd give him the job without hestitation, as a head coach... I don't know.

This is something that was surely talked about, right? In broad terms, how the organization is structured is even clear to us fans, so he easily could've known. If this really makes such a big difference to you as a coach, you mention it in your first interview and not back out at the very last minute.

Although the grammar and syntax of the second sentence are a bit ambiguous (who viewed it as valuable, the organization or McDaniels himself?), it sounds like McDaniels might have his sights set being a general manager someday.

Pete Carroll didn't do so well with the Jets or Patriots, and he came back and got a team to two Super Bowl's, winning one of them and should have won the 2nd one. I don't think this is a reason to exclude someone.



The only interview he has granted is with the Packers. Unless I missed something, which is very possible.

Update: I don't know how trustworthy this source is.

Agreed. You know the old saying "Past performance is no guarantee of future results." Just because other coaches fail in what was more than likely subpar situations doesn't mean a thing.

What an interesting thought. If so, our structure, which so many people are complainig about, might be a big advantage to landing him.

I've always told those in my charge, a mistake is okay, just make sure to learn from it. Especially holds true with raising kids. Which is why I'm open to a coach who has failed before.


Josh McDaniels told Ohio.com during the week before Super Bowl LII in Minnesota last year.
“Before you leave and you do that, it’s hard to say that you know what he’s going through because you really don’t,” “I’m very happy for the experiences that I’ve gone through. A lot of the failings in my career have been some of the best teachers that I’ve had. I’ve really learned a lot from them. I think I’m a better coach, a better communicator, a lot of things because of the things that I haven’t done well.”


I admire the humility here.
