The purpose of posting the video was to give insight, give some background on Raji's decision. Rourke clearly doesn't care about that, which is perfectly fine (as I've always said, we are all entitled to our opinions). I felt it's an asshole thing to say about someone who walked away from millions to spend time with his family because FAMILY was more important, not money. He didn't go "eh I made enough money, time to walk way". He walked away from the game because he wanted to spend the remaining moments, hours, days, weeks, months, years with those were dying.

As someone who's lost many (like most) this is highly sensitive to me because I wish I had that opportunity.

Commenting on only one of those two doesn't mean you can't agree with the other side, as well.

I find it fascinating how you repeatedly go to lengths to understand others and skim over my point in an effort to attack me. You're more interested in ridiculing me than focusing on the topic. I get it, you don't like me, no need to keep attacking me. I have enough shit to deal with.

I'm sorry if I come over that way. It's not intentional, if that's any solace. I understand your point. I've been trough enough stuff, as well. I just don't agree with the way you disregarded Rourke's comments in this thread. He comes from a point of reasoning and you come from a point of emotion. Both are fine, in my opinion.

I'm locking this thread (because my stupid emotional reaction of comment derailed the fuck out of it), please, just watch the video. What Raji did is admirable, in my opinion.

Update: Apparently locking it was another mistake. Go ahead, pile on.

It's not about piling on. I'd rather have it cleared up that I'm not responding to your posts out of some kind of hatred or dislike, but just out of disagreement on this point. Locking it up after responding gives for little ability to nuance what I said. I'm not trying to come over hostile. Might just be my Dutch directness combined with a bit of a language barrier.

I'm not making any kind of value value judgment when it comes to what BJ Raji did for his family. Maybe it was noble; maybe it wasn't. It simply doesn't matter to me personally. As cold as it sounds, I couldn't care less about NFL players as people, any more than I care about rock stars, movie stars, or comedians as people. To me they're nothing more than a bunch of wildly talented thoroughbreds paid obscene sums of money to provide me a few hours' worth of fun and respite from the shit I deal with in my everyday life. I root for them as long as they continue to play for my team or thrill me with their exploits (ala Peyton Manning), and after that, I'm through with them and don't look back. I know I'm on the extreme end of the spectrum when it comes to my lack of attachment to athletes, but there you have it.

From my perspective, it's obvious BJ Raji had made enough money, since the money wasn't enough to lure him back. And it's obvious his heart wasn't in the game, because unlike a lot of the old guys who keep on mushing until they die in the traces, he was able to stay away. That's neither a good nor a bad thing. It just is. Not every player has to be -- or even should be -- a Reggie White or a Charles Woodson.

In general people don't understand it when players "Max Bernbaum" and leave before they grow old. Barry did it and people who weren't Detroit fans had coronaries. For what? They still had to go to work on Monday and pay their mortgage once a month. Nothing in their drab little lives was different. Every single one of them eventually found a new personality to take Barry's place and they lived happily ever after.

Because of a family situation, I was forced to choose between fast career advancement and family. Like Raji, I chose family....never regretted it. And my guess is, he didn't either. Thankfully, my choice was not as binary as his. I did not have to permanently sacrifice a career....but I am not sure he had to either, but that was his choice.

You will never regret the time you spent with family during difficult times.

Mom thought it was too demanding on us so she kept telling us not to come over. She was there and they had a 24/7 caregiver. I told her they deserved to get some rest because they had him all day long. When she kept complaining I asked her if she was telling us that we couldn't spend as much time as possible with Dad in his final months. When she heard that she calmed down and didn't complain anymore.

We only have so many days and they are gone so very quickly. I am almost stunned when I think about being 60 years old and how fast it has gone by. I also realize the last "20" will go by even quicker.

Now that she has dementia I try to get over to see her 3 or 4 times a week. Sometimes I can. Sometimes life gets in the way.

That being said, my experience is different than the rest of yours: I put off my career many years for the sake of family, and now that my career is back on track, I'm finding I regret the delay more with every passing day.

I would never blame Raji for his decision, even if it was selfish and had nothing to do with his family (hypothetically). Just like love, one can't force passion, especially in the NFL. My point was that if he was deeply passionate about the NFL, he would have likely been a dominant player for many years because he is/was very talented. He wasn't deeply passionate, and it often showed on the field with play that didn't match his abilities. Since this was the case, he made the right decision to take a new path. Props to him for having conviction to make the tough call.

Likewise, I don't fault a man for continuing to play the game even if he isn't passionate about it, as long as he lives up to his end of the bargain and performs to standard. If I had the opportunity to set myself up financially for life by working for a few years in a field I wasn't passionate about and thereafter have the freedom to pursue whatever career I truly loved without the added pressure and stress of needing to work, I would surely do it.

To be frank, I think one of the things our personnel people should be looking at is the 'motor' within prospective players...how bad to they want it. I wonder whether or not that was examined pre-draft. I sure hope it is now.

Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)

Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck

beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
