This Acme Packing Company  article from a couple of weeks ago looks almost prophetic now.

. . . regardless of how the rest of 2018 unfolds, Sunday’s 31-17 loss to the New England Patriots will mark the unofficial end of the Mike McCarthy era in Green Bay.

[. . . ]

. . . Sunday’s game in Foxborough underscored just how far the Packers have fallen behind their competition. While McCarthy followed a relatively straightforward game plan, the Patriots unleashed multiple trick plays and packages specifically designed to exploit their opponent’s deficiencies. Green Bay’s defense had no answer for the lightspeed no-huddle offense Tom Brady led on the opening drive, nor did the unit have any idea what to do on the James White-Julian Edelman flea flicker that set the Patriots up 2 yards away from the goal line. The difference in coaching represented the biggest (and perhaps only) meaningful difference between the two teams, an indictment of McCarthy and the staff he has assembled.

[ . . . ]

Green Bay’s management hasn’t made a public statement suggesting a hot seat for McCarthy, but their actions belie their words. Team president Mark Murphy restructured the organization this past offseason in order to give himself the power to hire and fire the head coach. At the same time, Murphy demoted longtime general manager Ted Thompson in order to install Brian Gutekunst, a move further reducing McCarthy’s ties to the front office. Sunday morning’s report that the Cleveland Browns -- a team led by a cavalcade of former Packers scouts -- see McCarthy as a possible replacement for deposed head coach Hue Jackson further reinforces the idea that Green Bay will make a change this offseason.

And while the Packers won’t formalize that decision until after their final game, the move became unavoidable in November.

For those saying that Rodgers isn’t doing his job, I disagree. He had an excellent game last night up until the couple of late 3rd downs where he missed the check down, and the last throw which was just a bad throw (which he admitted to in his press conference). Every QB messes up & makes bad throws, but to say that Rodgers isn’t doing his job because of a couple of plays? Come on.

Then he leverages a $100 million contract in the offseason. BOOM. Now he has leverage over the franchise. They cannot cut him, or they take a $30 million cap hit for the next three years. And who will want to trade for this?

Far as I'm concerned, he is tanking on purpose, and that is BREECH OF CONTRACT. Bottom line is there is no longer anyone in the franchise who is willing or able to stand up to their dive QB. It's fucking OVER.

And he’s put his health on the line many times rushing for the first down. And he’s played all year with a bad knee that many wouldn’t consider playing with.

That’s hardly “tanking on purpose”.

I won't be upset about it other than for the circumstances that have precipitated it (losing season, failing to make the playoffs etc.) but what happens to the defense. I think its fair to say we have made strides under Pettine. Will he be retained or will the new coach replace him. What will that do to the defensive improvements.

I'm not advocating keeping McCarthy just so we don't lose Pettine because I'm sure there are other DCs out there who could do the job. Its just that after finally seeing improvements it would be tough to go back to uncertainty.

to the topic at hand, specifically Time to clean house.
To be frank with you, given the number of injuries the defense has had...Wilkerson, Perry, King, Daniels, et alia, and trading away a supposed all pro, I think it’s incredible that they have played as well as they have.
The defense, youngsters and all, appear to be very competitive and very well coached. So as far as the cries for house cleaning, at least on the defensive side of the ball, I could not disagree more. I like what Pettine has brought...ALOT
In fact, I like it so much, if the decision was made to jettison MM, MP would be my top candidate.
I recall another defensive coach, who became a head coach and was fired. When given a second chance, he has subsequently turned out to be a pretty good head coach … His name is Bill Belichick

The time to "clean house", was last February.

Mark Murphy is the one everyone should be venting at!

Murphy had a chance to make a clean sweep, New GM, New HC, new coaching staff.

What did he do?

Moved Ted to scouting(which is what he loves to do anyway).

Instead of hiring a GM with total control, he comes up with the hairbrain idea of having the new GM having no control over the HC.

I'm not sure if these moves hindered the process, but it sure hasn't panned out yet.

You want to be pissed off at someone, make it Mark Murphy!

He is the one who got us here.
I was addicted to The Hokey Pokey, but I turned myself around!

McCarthy has his pluses and minuses but he is just straight up not a good decision maker in tight games/situations. He is also inconsistent with his playcalling giving the offense no real rhythm or identity. He doesn't really call the offense to set anything up it's just scatter shot decisions over and over again. Just random passing plays with a random run here and there.

Sure Rodgers doesn't help with all the broken plays and everyone likes to point out when there's a RB ignored underneath here and there but on most of the busted plays there really isn't people getting open and if your offense requires the QB to check down that often to the RB it's still not good.
