Any one else think this might be true? Maybe use 2018 as an evaluation year as well as stockpiling assets and then bring new staff on board.

It wouldn't surprise me.

I feel like this theory is suggesting this is one huge master plan by a single person, and I disagree with that... I feel like this year was going to be a rebuilding year even before Gute got hired...

I mean the physical talent simply wasn't there... the MM decided to fired Capers (rebuilding), someone decided Thompson time was done (rebuilding)... both before Gute was hired... and they simply didn't have the back end defensive talented (no choice but to rebuild) and they came up with a plan and decided cut Jordy Nelson (almost willingly rebuilding the WRs) and looked like Pettine's choosing to rebuild the defense in his image (which he needed to).

So I believe the Packers management as a whole decided they needed to rebuild (or reload or whatever term you want), and this isn't solely a master plan by Gute. If the WRs develop, then the Packers big needs next season are OLB, DL, S, OG, back-up OT and back-up TE.

And it's supposed to be a very good draft year for OLB and DL... OGs are supposed to be easier to find.

Leaving S (maybe two S), back-up OT and back-up TE as the huge needs for FAs. Maybe ILB too ...

Also I'm still wondering about the idea to put Josh Jones at S instead of ILB... I think he can develop into a good Saftey, but I thought he might be able to be a great ILB and play sooner... just saying.

(Rodgers) absence last season put them in position to draft an immediate difference maker. Gutekunst decided to gather assets. More and more I think he was fine punting on 2018 and setting himself up long term, which I totally get. That’s a GM’s job.

(Edit: I guess LB Leighton Vander Esch is another one, as he's doing a lot better than I thought, but come on, they needed CBs and Alexander is doing pretty well when on the field)

Also as DoddPower points out, other than that 1st round trade back, how did he save assets? ... He would of saved more by by keeping Jordy and not signing big named FAs.

It is curious that the accolades for the past regime were endless...and now the cupboard there is a realization that "the talent just isn't there"

I wouldn't be surprised if the GM was fine punting on the 2018 season. I just don't know that the evidence supports it. We did grab an extra 1st rounder (asset), but still got a player who I think can be a difference maker for us. And if he actually was punting on 2018, why be one of two teams aggressively trading assets (draft picks) to acquire Khahil Mack knowing the salary you'd have to pay him?

I think Nagler was more or less just spitballing an idea here rather than actually saying HE WAS PUNTING 2018 SEASON.

They traded down, picked up an extra 1st round pick, which pretty much everyone thought was a good deal for the Packers, and still managed to draft two good corners who look like they might be long term starters. (I would also argue that when healthy, Jaire Alexander has been an immediate difference maker.) They traded a malcontent, cut an aging Nelson and didn't resign a few guys but were otherwise more active in free agency than they typically have been. They tried to trade for Mack (we can assume that extra first round pick was involved) and tried to sign that RFA corner from the Bears, but the Bears matched it. They picked up Breeland after the season started, which may yet prove to be a great move. I think it's somewhat of a stretch to say they are holding back or saving for the future or whatever.

I would guess the Packers assumed that with a healthy Aaron Rodgers, they would have a pretty good team, despite lack of quality starters or depth at some positions. I would say this was a fairly reasonable assumption all things considered. 6 games in it's not exactly clear, they're looking somewhat average overall but could still turn it around, or could regress further.
