Texans running back Ryan Moats recently was involved in a disturbing incident with a Dallas police officer, and the situation sufficiently disturbed the officers superiors to result in a temporary reassignment, pending a full investigation.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Moats drove with his wife, her grandfather, and her great-aunt to Baylor Regional Medical Center, where Moats mother-in-law was dying of breast cancer at age 45.

Moats drove with the hazard lights on, and at one point he went through a red light. Robert Powell, a 25-year-old officer, followed Moats until he parked outside the hospitals emergency room.

The ensuing confrontation was memorialized via a dashboard camera. It went a little something like this.

Just give me a ticket or whatever, Moats said.

Shut your mouth, Powell said. You can cooperate and settle down, or I can just take you to jail for running a red light.

If youre going to give me a ticket, give me a ticket.

Your attitude says that you need one.

All Im asking you is just to hurry up.

If you want to keep this going, Ill just put you in handcuffs, and Ill take you to jail for running a red light. . . . Understand what I can do. I can tow your truck. I can charge you with fleeing. I can make your night very difficult.

Thirteen minutes after Moats arrived, the officer finally let him enter the facility. In the interim, hospital security guards and a Plano police officer explained to Powell that Moats mother-in-law truly was dying inside the hospital.

By the time Moats and his mother-in-laws father had gotten inside the hospital, Moats mother-in-law had died.

Moats and his wife, who are black, believe that Powell, who is white, might have been motivated by the racial differences. Either way, Moats thinks Powell should be fired.

Dallas police are investigating.

When people are in distress, we should come to the rescue, Assistant Chief Floyd Simpson told the Dallas Morning News. We shouldnt further their distress.

Wow.

We didnt think there was anyone less fit than Plaxico Burress to carry a weapon. Robert Powell just might have Burress beat.

That is unreal i watched the video all the way thru and it was very sad at the end. Here he was told over and over again the mother was dying and yet after all of that he gives the ticket and then laughs and jokes about a chase. Then the last thing you hear is the cops saying they have to go find some place to eat.

Don't you think he should have went in there and apologized after all of that but yet sits and laughs. Thats just sick. I started reading some of the comments on that site but i don't feel like going thru 243 pages of them.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

That cop is a piece of shit. He kept telling the guy that he had a bad attitude. The COP is the one with the bad attitude. "I can ruin your night."

Seriously? His mother in law is dying and you tell him you can ruin his night? Wow.

The cop apologized:

LINK

"I wish to publicly and sincerely apologize to the Moats family, my colleagues in the Dallas Police Department and to all those who have been rightfully angered by my actions," Powell said in the statement. "After stopping Mr. Moats' vehicle, I showed poor judgment and insensitivity to Mr. Moats and his family by my words and actions."

Also from the article:
"Powell also said he has attempted to reach Moats."

_____________________________________________________________

Moats initially wanted the cop fired, but has since backed off that. That cop really showed some poor judgment, but I was impressed by the fact that the Chief of Police issued those apologies very publicly and very quickly. How often do we see this kind of thing get white-washed?

I heard something on the radio today from a 42 year old cop calling in to Colin Cowherd's radio show. He said that in his experience, there are 3 basic types of cops. The good ones... that really try and leave their preconceived notions in the squad car, the ones that got their lunch taken from them when they were kids and now wear a badge to get even with everyone, and the morons on a complete ego trip.

I gotta go with door number three, at least on that evening, but I also know that it is POSSIBLE that this cop just stuck to his guns a little too much this one time, and the whole insurance card thing did not help, with respect to what Moats said. I can understand WHY he got a bit belligerent, but that same piece of fairness has to at least be considered when I think about WHY the cop never "un-pricked" in the situation.

No, I am NOT forgiving the cop...he was a complete asshole. I am merely wondering out loud if he absolutely should be fired for this, or suspended for this. I have a sense that national public ridicule might rehabilitate his arrogant ass. Before you jump on me for this, half of us forgave Vick for killing those dogs, and I'm just trying to get with the program...I wonder if the cop has any defensive line skills in order to help us all with some charity towards our fellow man. :tongue3:

I was also impressed by the fact that Moats never pulled out the "I'm an NFL player" card.

I just want to reiterate that I was as infuriated by this as everyone.

Well.......to me..........the apology is nice, but would it have happened had there not been video evidence of what a huge A-hole the cop was?
ALL the cop would have had to do was follow the family into the hospital, see for himself that the story was true, and that would have been the end of the story.
What goes around comes around. It WILL come back to that cop some day.

I'm gonna give you a personal example.
In October of 1990, my Mother was dying. There was no hope, and it was just a matter of days. Her "doctor" came into the room, and i was quite upset. I said to him "Doc, how do you deal with this kind of thing? Dealing with death every day?" You know what his answer was to comfort me????
"Well......it's not like it's MY mother!" And he said it in a sarcastic tone. I couldn't believe what i had just heard from this "angel of mercy".
I sat there, dumfounded. He couldn't have done more to rip my heart out of me. A few days later, my Mom was gone.

I have a habit of looking through the death notices, just to see if anyone i know may have passed away. I believe it was only a few months after my Mom died, that i saw a last name in the paper that i recognized........same last name as my Mom's doctor. When i read it, it had his name as her surviving son. I didn't get any joy out of it, but i admit i DID think "How does it feel NOW, doctor?" I felt like showing up at the funeral home just to ask him that question........but no, i didn't do it.

I'm not sure theres half that forgave Vick.

As for the cop, I was astonished when the nurse said 'his mother in law is dying' and he said 'ill him up once im finished with this'. Seriously, what the hell was so important that couldn't wait?

Moats broke the law, yes.

I think some good things came from this sad event. If I were in a similar situation, I think I would now likely pull over immediately and explain my situation rather than wait until I got to the hospital to try and explain it, and I'd bet I'm not alone in that thinking.

The 2nd good thing that came from this is that perhaps my "strategy" might no longer be necessary. I would be willing to bet that just about every police department in the country has briefed their officers on a compassionate response in situations such as this. Even the absolute prick cops amongst the cop population might "get it", if for no other reason than job preservation.
