One of the TV announcers (I believe for ESPN's NFL Live) said reports are saying Mack is going after the largest defensive contract in NFL history mark (of course so is Aaron Donald).
But I think I much rather have two 1st round picks in this coming draft, especially since some have suggested that this coming draft is loaded with defensive line and defensive edge draft class... and looks like the Packers might need DL and Edge players, so the draft currently might perfectly fir the Packers needs, just like this last year was loaded with a CB draft class and the Packers needed CBs.
I think the Packers have looked at needs from a 2 year perceptive: In the next two years here are the guys going into contract years.
QB Rodgers
RB Montgomery
WR Cobb, Davis
TE Kendricks, Lewis
OT Bulaga, Murphy, Spriggs, Bell
DL Wilkerson, Daniels, Lowry
OLB Matthews, Fackrell
ILB Martinez, Ryan
S Clinton-Dix
CB Williams, House, Rollins,
K Crosby
Assuming they resign Rodgers and the Packers' three young, high draft pick CBs are able to step up over the next two/three years...
that leaves OT, DL and OLB as the big needs the the 2019 draft seems to be loaded with DL and edge rushers. So
it seems like the 2019 draft perfectly fits the Packers needs, so I want to keep those high picksBut it's going to be costly to resign some of the players, which resigning Mack doesn't help... and some of them are going to need to be replaced via the draft, which trading picks for Mack doesn't help.
So I'll stick with the cheaper, high draft picks in the 2019 draft.
