What way do you look at Randall Cobb? Old 27 year old, or young 8 year veteran?

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- There are a couple of ways of looking at Randall Cobb:

He's an old 27 given the toll that 107 career NFL games, including playoffs, have taken on his body.

Or even though he's entering his eighth NFL season, he's not yet 28 years old.

This season could dictate how the Green Bay Packers receiver is viewed and what it means for his future with the team that picked him in the second round of the 2011 draft.

It's a pivotal spot not only because he's in the final season of a four-year, $40 million contract, but given the opportunities he should have after the Packers cut receiver Jordy Nelson this offseason. Some thought the Packers might dump Cobb and keep Nelson. Instead, the receiving corps consists of Cobb, Davante Adams, Geronimo Allison and a host of young, unproven players, including three draft picks.

I look at Cobb as very much underappreciated... versatile threat, consistent and produces. Reminds me of the comments on Hyde and Hayward prior to them leaving, more so Hyde than Hayward. Very solid players that play their role very well.. and could star in many circumstances on other rosters or schemes. The system in Green Bay is paramount to leveraging the strengths of players as a norm.

I view Cobb as a 27 year old player that is still in the prime.. and if highlighted, could shine very brightly. But he isn't 6 foot plus and isn't a quick twitch slot... so people want to minimize him because he doesn't fit the ideals. A very solid above average NFL player, good locker room guy and at this point, a strong connection for Rodgers yet on the roster.

Lost the short area burst and change of direction that made him special. Doesn’t have versatility to line up on the perimeter, but can line up in the backfield and return punts.

Not much production per million dollars of pay.

On a contract he will be playing his ass off though. Not sure if I would re-sign him unless at a significantly lower number.

I think he still has the quick change of direction, the inside the 10 clip here says he still has the short burst... we have to remember a couple things during a relatively healthy year for him, Hundley was the QB last season. With Rodgers at the helm, Cobb was productive.

The other issue we have, may still have, is that we don't have many over the top threats to keep the defense honest.. they can creep up on the short routes which is really the wheel house routes for Cobb. Some of that is also McCarthy's DNA as a playcaller...

If we are talking salary, yes, his salary this year is too high. But he signed a 4 / 40 contract that was backend loaded into the final two seasons. I am somewhat surprised they didn't work out an extension, but from Cobb's perspective, he is better off playing it out. He could hit the market at 28.. and productive... max leverage.

He's still 2nd in the league in seperation yardage (3.5 yard per play) the last few years. He caught 15 balls the first 2 games of 2017 before the shoulder injury, by the time be was healthy again Rodgers was out.

If the Packers can reestablish the deep ball the underneath stuff will open up again.
