Jaire Alexander | Cornerback | Louisville| 5'10" - 196 lbs.

Wearing #23

Overview
Twitchy and quick, Alexander is an instinctive cornerback with the ability to anticipate routes and the quickness to close on throws and make plays on the ball. He tape in 2017 was uneven due to issues with a sprained knee which could raise concerns over his durability considering his slender build. When healthy, he has the potential to become a second cornerback, but teams may view him as a full time nickel cornerback who is able to avoid the rigors of excessive run support.

Strengths
• Athletic and tough
• Came back for last three games of the season despite missing multiple games due to sprained knee and a broken hand
• Eyes stay on quarterback when he's able
• Aware and instinctive
• Spots traffic from zone and squeezes passing lanes
• Carries playmaking traits
• Quick response time when quarterback begins release
• Smooth mover with plus acceleration to chase
• Feet are light and sudden
• Crowds and mirror receiver's release without panicking
• Stays connected to routes
• Pattern reader capable of sudden stops to mirror comeback routes
• Aggressive attacking catch point
• Climbs on top of receivers and rips arms through potential catches
• Has decent recovery burst on the deep ball
• Communicative with teammates
• Weaknesses
• Gangly frame unlikely to carry much more good weight
• Injuries and missed time make 2017 tape tricky to evaluate
• Avoided excess contact with blockers and appeared to lack his typical brand of aggressiveness
• Needs to play with better knee bend from press
• Read routes and created opportunities to attack throws but defaulted to the safe play
• Can get grabby in man coverage
• Allows base widen and loses balance during transitions from time to time
• Gave up too many redzone touchdowns in 2016
• Inconsistent getting head around in time to find the football
• Inconsistent finisher as tackler and may struggle to get off of NFL blocks
• 4.38 40 yard dash

Can't say I'm down with this. Gotta be more classy than that.

Damn, he really flips his hips quickly.

The youngster held his own!

It seems Gute was determined to take a CB. Could have taken Alexander at 14 and said eff it when Saints called. Probably figured to settle for Jackson, Oliver or Hughes at #27, [or maybe Landry or Evans] but then got a 2nd shot to get Alexander.

GB goes from #14 to #18 getting the same guy and they lose #76 and #186; get #147 and #248.
And we get Saints #1 next year, and as isocleas said if Brees gets hurt or just loses it [This can happen at 84 yrs of age] that could be a good one. Plus the Saints got lucky last year, I think they’re an 8-8ish team even with Brees.

Don’t know much about Alexander yet. Mayock hasn’t missed on too many DBs and he had Alexander #12. Brandt had him at #16.

Alexander played in ’15 as a true freshman, He played back-up CB and punt returner and played in 12 of 13 games [missing 1 game w/ an ankle].

In ’16 he started 13 of 13.

In ’17 he started game 1 and sprained his knee
Played a little in game 2 and tweaked it
Then missed games 3, 4, 5
Played in game 6, but then broke hand
And missed games 7, 8, 9
Started games 10, 11 and 12
Then skipped #13, the Bowl game-to protect his draft status

GMs that gamble away high picks on injured players are idiots; but Alexander was healthy enough to play at end of season. Alexander’s skipping of his team’s bowl game to protect his NFL prospects is a serious character red flag! Remember this when he’s up for his 2nd contract. Hopefully he got clean medicals and they did sufficient due diligence on his character.

Note: he ran a 4.32 in 2017Spring testing at Louisville.

I think this says something good about Jaire's character here.

on the nfl.com they show him running back a kick return in his highlights that dont show anything just him running and having some nice lanes - I really hope he is more then just that highlight reel.

Was a good day 1 for the Packers, they got some nice value in the trade with New Orleans and still got the #2 CB in the draft. I didn't read up on Jaire Alexander before the draft but he seems to have alot of the same moxy that Ward has. Also the hand + knee injuries that derailed his final year at Louisville are pretty minor he should have no lingering effects for 2018.

I think most fans knew the Packers had too many picks so they were either going to package them to move up or trade for future (2019) picks. This was a good way of accomplishing that. I still expect the Packers to move back into the 3rd round by trading some of those 4th/5th rounders they've stockpiled.

If you're new and need time catching up, being fast is a major advantage. Fans wanted a true corner and now they've got one. Sometimes you got to look for the sunshine through the trees.
