The Green Bay Packers could potentially land four compensatory picks in the 2018 NFL Draft. One benefit of losing players to big contracts in free agency is the potential of being awarded compensatory draft selections. That looks to be the case for the Packers in 2018, who are in position to land four additional picks,

It would be nice if the NFL had a matrix where you could package comp picks and trade up. Say package a 4th and 5th or 3 5th round picks for a 3rd round selection.

The move would have to be announced 30 days prior to the draft.

Teams would have to decide to they really want more bullets in their gun like Uncle Teddy use to say or do they want a really special bullet.

It's good that Gute is going to have a lot of ammunition to work with in his inaugural draft.
It's going to be interesting to see how he handles it.

So currently a 3rd and three 5th round comp selections.

I'm still hoping that the Hyde 5th becomes a 4th with the help of his post season awards with both a Pro-bowl and All-Pro awards, combined with being so next the 4th cutoff, his has a shot at becoming a 4th.

Teams are allowed to trade their comp picks now.
Pretty sure it started last year.
If not , I know for sure they can this year.
The Packers get 4 comp picks + the 8 they already have (2-7th rnd picks) , that's going to give them plenty of ammo if they want to move around.
Would you rather stay pat and draft 12 players or package some picks and end up with say 6 or 7 ?

Personally I would rather trade up and have a few playmakers than a bunch of guys who will be 45-53 on the roster. Depth is great and it's needed but I want to improve 2-10 more. You have a better chance on day 1 and 2 to accomplish this. When you do the bottom of the roster is improved as well.

I personally would rather trade up and do whatever it takes to get higher picks even if it means fewer picks.

The Bills would be interesting, as they do have two firsts to play with. Getting their 22nd pick, along with their 53rd pick checks out as pretty much even on the trade chart.

That gives you ammunition to trade up in the 2nd for a guy like Hayden Hurst or just sit back and pick up a guy like Anthony Averett with the pick we'd get from the Bills...

Anyway, that's all speculation. I do know that I'd be a bit let down if Gutekunst starts out by trading for a lot of future picks or dropping out of the 1st completely from pick 14. The stats show that round 1 and early round 2 are, obviously, the places to find some impact players.

After that, though, it pretty much becomes a crap shoot if you look at the amount of Pro Bowlers per round. I know, Pro Bowl doesn't say that much, but you don't get there by being a total nobody. For everything round 3 and down, I prefer the Herschel Walker approach. Just stack a lot of those picks and hope that two or three pan out. That's really all you can ask for. I mean, if you really think guys in the 3rd or later would be Pro Bowers, you wouldn't be drafting them in the 3rd.
