Adams was stood up. NO excuse to hit him when he was defenseless.
And the refs SHOOD have whistled it dead sooner. It was obvious Adams wasn't getting any further.

Why blow the whistle if the player isn't down? You keep fighting and fighting for more yards. If they can't bring you down, that's not your fault. You keep fighting.

It's not player safety either. It's over governance of the game. Let the players play the damn game. When the ball carrier is on the ground, that and only that time is when you blow the whistle.

The game isn't this hard people. It really isn't.

When you get hurt is when you are the ball carrier and think my forward progress has stopped so I let up BROKEN LEG. Stop the non sense. Let the players play.

Edit, forgive the asshole tone there, not intentional but reading it now, wow. My bad.

If forward progress is stopped, they are supposed to blow the whistle.
That happens every game.

It does happen every game, exactly proving my point. It's wrong. The whistle blows and who ever backs down first? It's terrible, awful rule.

I don't like all the rules in the NFL and this one has always boggling my mind how little attention people give it's absurd (my opinion anyhow) existence.

My problem with the play was that the only contact option left was to Adam's head but that was not the only option Trevethon had. He could have gone into the pile already there to assist in stopping progress. You see it all the time. With a player in a defenseless position I'm sorry but the option to go to the head should be off the table.
By the grace of God Adams came thru this somehow, however, I wonder what the discussion would be if he were laying in a hospital bed not moving. I know I never want to see a hit like that again and I doubt any one else does either. Heaven forbid this might allow the ball to advance another yard in these rugby scrum-like plays but in the big picture IMO it's the right thing to do.
These guys have 50-60 plays to get a lick in on a player. This type of circumstances just shouldn't be one of them.

beast (6h) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (11h) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (11h) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (12h) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (12h) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
