When the Packers drafted Josh Jones in the third round back in April, it was only a matter of time into the regular season before the rookie would begin making his case for more snaps.
Now, after an injury to Kentrell Brice in last week's loss to the Atlanta Falcons, Jones got his shot.
He didn't play in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks and he saw just 29 snaps against the aforementioned Falcons, but on Sunday, he made sure his presence was felt tenfold against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Jones led the team in every defensive category by the time Mason Crosby's walk-off field goal won the game in overtime for the Packers. He finished with 12 total tackles, two sacks and three tackles for a loss. He also got to Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton for two hits.

Both of his sacks came in crucial third-down situations. One in the first quarter and one in the third to push the Bengals nearly entirely out of field goal range when they were threatening to increase their lead to double-digits. Jones' sack forced Randy Bullock to miss his kick wide right from 48 yards away.
Jones also made a vital third-down tackle on the Bengals' lone overtime possession, forcing the punt and giving quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the offense a chance to win the game -- which is precisely what they did.
Whether this performance knocks Brice down on the depth chart and leaves Jones as a significant component to defensive coordinator Dom Capers' "nitro package" is unlikely, considering the Packers don't make assessments based off of one game.
One thing, however, is for certain: The Packers are going to have to find a way to get Jones more snaps.
Many viewed the North Carolina State product as a replacement for ex-cornerback Micah Hyde, who was a human Swiss Army knife for the defense. Others, meanwhile, see him as an outlet that provides safety Morgan Burnett to play on the back end at his natural safety spot. Either that or Burnett's eventual replacement.
Sunday was a hint of the many possibilities Jones is capable of when deployed into a variety of situations. He essentially shined on third down against the Bengals and could certainly be attributed as one of the major reasons why the Packers were able to walk away with their second win of the season.
Between Jones and inside linebacker Blake Martinez, who somehow flew under the radar despite finishing second on the team in tackles (11) just behind Jones -- one of them being an impressive open-field tackle on A.J. Green in the fourth quarter -- the Packers certainly have a handful of performances to gush over.
On a short week, the Packers will lick their wounds and hope to get back at least a couple of their seven doubtful players from week three before Thursday night when the rival Chicago Bears venture into Lambeau Field.

He's a rookie, so he's gonna have his lumps, but the kid can ball.

If Burnett and Jones are gonna play slot, why not have Randall and Rollins back deep as safeties? I mean it's their natural position anyway.

Drafting Josh jones legitimately won us a game and it's only week 3

Sorry CheeseheadTV, but Jones was drafted in the 2nd round... mistakes happen to everyone but it feels a bit worse when you open with the error.

Adams was the 3rd round pick.

He made a great play in overtime. He had a pretty darn good game overall.
He earned his check today!

I'll be the first to admit I don't always pay that much attention to all the intricate aspects of the game. I notice big plays (both good and bad) but many of the small things get past me.

As Nerd said, he is a rookie, he is going to have his off moments. I certainly noticed Jones' good big plays yesterday but for those of you who watch with a closer eye to detail how was he otherwise. If he hadn't had the two sacks and the key third down tackle in OT what would you be saying about him?

He had a good fricken game. Pretty much the closest game impact wise I've seen from a DB since we had Woodson here.

this kid is the player drafted and new to the team that I was most interested in seeing. His combination of speed and size is something I've been wanting the team to have. Aaron Rouse didn't pan out, and it is way early to know how Jones will end up, but the early signs are good. Hope he keeps improving and doesn't end up with injuries or hitting a development wall.

Interesting thing for the future is if Jones keeps playing well, how much is the team going to be willing to spend on Burnett or are his days on the Packers counting down.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

So I don't think Jones is directly taking his spot, as they would like three Safeties, and it largely depends on how well the UDFA Safeties Brice and Evans play and their versatility, etc.

Also remember they have to resign Haha too, as no one was playing well at the FS spot until he came along. While Haha might do a glaring error on a hard hit, he usually plays it smart when he's the only one around and I'm not sure the other guys can play well as the starting FS.

The Packers might be wanting to keep BOTH Burnett and Jones ESPECIALLY IF
~ Burnett becomes the starting nickel CB
AND
~ Jones becomes the starting coverage ILB

Packers Snap Counts, Week 3
DEFENSE (61 plays)

Inside Linebackers: Blake Martinez 47, Joe Thomas 14

Cornerbacks: Kevin King 61, Damarious Randall 52, Josh Hawkins 9, Quinten Rollins 7

Safeties: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix 61, Morgan Burnett 61, Josh Jones 61, Marwin Evans 54

Only 1 ILB got 15 snaps
Only 2 CBs got 10 snaps
While 4 Ss got 50+ snaps

So they had a Safety getting starting snaps at nickel CB and coverage ILB and Burnett and Jones have that versatility you want and need on a team.

I think Jones has the potential to be really good to great.
I'm not really impressed with Dix, I would rather spend the money on Burnett and let Dix walk if push came to shove.

Mucky Tundra (1h) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (1h) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (1h) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (1h) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (1h) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (4h) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (4h) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (5h) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (7h) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (7h) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (7h) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (7h) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (7h) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (7h) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (7h) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (7h) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (8h) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (9h) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (9h) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (9h) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (9h) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (9h) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (10h) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (10h) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (10h) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (11h) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (11h) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (11h) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (11h) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (11h) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (11h) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (12h) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (12h) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (13h) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (13h) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (13h) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (13h) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (13h) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (13h) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (13h) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (14h) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (14h) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (14h) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (14h) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (14h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (14h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (14h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (14h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (14h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (14h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
