So your question is if they keep him on the active 53 injured, can they put him on IR later. The answer would be yes.

I know they get two guys they can do that with. I don't recall a situation where a guy who could go IR was rostered and then IRed without a new injury.

If we can just IR designate to return with Adams whether he's rostered or not, it would make more sense to IR now to open another spot.

It is a big sign of his progress if they IR him or not.

This is what I was looking for:

***For any player to be available as a short term return designation, the player would need to be on the initial 53 man roster.***

This is key. So, if Adams gets IRed on the cut, he is done for the year. We have to roster him to have him at all this season.

I agree. What they do tells us if they think he'll possibly be a factor the 2nd half. I'm betting the just red shirt him in a sense and IR him now to create another spot.

If they carry him on the roster injured like he is can they really put him on IR for same injury later?

If you go back to 2016 with this link, you'll see that Dorleant was kept two days after the 53 man roster cuts and then placed on the IR... so that he could potentially return at a later date (which he did).

If we can just IR designate to return with Adams whether he's rostered or not, it would make more sense to IR now to open another spot.

To be IR eligible, you're to have an injury that will take 6 weeks or longer to recover from.

I believe the Packers did it with both S Chris Banjo and WR Jared Abbrederis... they had too many banged up guys at once... and them being the low men on the injury pool, they were IRed just to make more room for healthy players with fairly small injuries and were then released.

PS: Where did you find the "***For any player to be available as a short term return designation, the player would need to be on the initial 53 man roster.***" ... that's well worded. I wasn't sure if you got it from a link.

As for a qualifying IR injury, I found this:

A major injury is described as an injury that renders the player unable to practice or play football for at least six weeks — or 42 calendar days — from the date of injury.

The Dorleant info was good. Thanks. You know these rules are manipulated all the time by teams and very loosely monitored because we've put more guys on IR than anyone else it seems.

Years ago, I used to be able to get into the NFLPA website. I want to access the actual NFL rules regarding this but all I can find are team blog sources and whatnot. I want the letter of the law on the rules. Not making it easy for me for sure.

Does the team have to jump through all the hoops? Meaning, do they have to cut to 53, then announce IR? Or can they just say, he will be starting the season on IR. If they have to cut first, then that also means who ever they would put on the roster in his spot needs to go through all the Post cut procedures before being able to be brought back.
