What do you all think? Is 5 games to much, would another player have gotten less, and Burfict is being punished for his reputation and history. Should there be no punishment at all? the hit was within 5 yard of the LOS.

How much defense do we want to keep taking out of the game?

I thought 5 games sounded like a lot for that hit until I saw a highlight reel of his cheap shots. A couple might have not been intentionally to injure people but holy shit some of these are bad. Guy shouldn't be in the league at all. There's laying hard hits down and then there's very obviously taking shots at people's heads and knees, in many cases when people are not actually in the play. Let's be real - Anthony Sherman wasn't in the play. You can try to parse rules all you want but Burfict knew where the ball was going (like 10 yards behind Sherman). Blocking him? Fine. Shot to his shoulders and head when he's running perpendicular and doesn't see him coming? When he's got a history of that stuff? Yeah, sit your ass down Vontaze.

All fine and dandy until he does something like that to Aaron Rodgers and gives him a concussion or worse and then everyone's screaming for him to be kicked out of the league

OK if the ball hadn't been thrown elsewhere is this same hit legal or illegal? If it is a FB releasing into the route or a TE crossing inside the 5 yards, should a hit like this be legal?

Also, new rule.

http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/246090/fair-question-was-vontaze-burficts-hit-legal

In March, the NFL amended its rule book in a way that often goes unnoticed by the majority of fans and media. It added a new qualification for defenseless player protection, part of the league's larger effort to minimize the chances for injury-producing contact.

Rule 12, Section 2, Article 7(a-2) grants protection to "a receiver running a pass route when the defender approaches from the side or behind." In other words, defenders would be limited in the ways they could disrupt route running on a pass play.

At about the same time, NFL owners enhanced their discipline policy to encourage officials to eject, or the league office to suspend, players for particularly violent or flagrant hits to the head or neck area -- even on a first offense. The new emphasis was a clear warning that the league planned to further intensify its focus on the issue for the 2017 season.

If a player has a history of cheap shots (Harrison) I am favor of the fine being greater than what someone else may get. I realize the appeals process will deduce it. If not let him sit down for a while. Guys have to learn not to maim their opponent. It takes more before some learn. If they ever do.

Some say, well it was away from the play, so they let him cross, and the ball happens to end up as an Interception and that FB is now able to make a tackle to prevent a TD.

Getting pretty close to taking the defense off the field through rules.

But he came from closer to the side than the front. Maybe 50 degrees off the front. MAYBE 45, it's hard to tell. But what should the NFL do in a situation like this, especially with someone with a clear history of intentionally going after people's heads, ankles, knees, etc?

YOu just point out more reason the rule change is bad. Technically anything that isn't 100% straight in front could be considered the side. And if the WR is running a route, how is the defender going to come and hit them from "behind"? you ask, What should they do, nothing, there were already rules to cover. If the WR is within 5 yards of the LOS there can be contact, if past that, it is already illegal to hit them from the front, back, side, top or bottom.

I'm not sure if it should have been an illegal hit, and I don't think a players history should be a deciding factor in whether to consider something legal or illegal. It is either legal or not. If not, sure then look at history to determine punishment.

Many times I've seen a WR running a slant or offenses doing "RUB" routes, and a DB shoulder chuck them and knock them off their feet preventing them from being able to finish the route. That would be illegal under this rule. Offenses are going to adjust plays to you have guys like Gronk crossing shallow where they will basically be untouchable. All defenders are going to be able to do is tackle after the catch, not stop it from happening.
