After our amazing run culminating in a SB in Dallas, here's what we've done as a franchise via the draft in the first 3 rounds...

Derek Sherrod, Randall Cobb, Alex Green

Nick Perry, Jerrell Worthy, Casey Hayward

Ha Ha, Davante Adams, Khyri Thornton

Datone Jones, Eddie Lacy

Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins, Ty Montgomery

Kenny Clark, Jason Spriggs, Kyler Fackrell

Kevin King, Josh Jones, Montravius Adams

How many of the above are blue chip players? I'd say...ZERO. Cobb has been good but disappointing the last couple of years, Perry has been good and given big money due to having nothing behind him, Randall and Rollins have been abysmal. Ty is now in another position and doesn't appear capable of carrying the load of a #1 RB. Clark shows some promise as does Josh Jones and Ha Ha is a good player. Oh, and I know Davante has some support as becoming a star on this forum...I hope that's the case.

That's a very very very weak crop of guys up above. Not a single star out of the group. For a team that refuses to add stars via FA it's no wonder we haven't been back to the show. Peppers helped get us close.

I hope somehow someone breaks out among the above and proves to be a star. Cobb looked to be the one who could do it. SEVEN of the above are no longer with us.

How many blue chip players are taken in the last half of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds of each draft? I know of one off the top of my head. DeAndre Hopkins ... I believe he was in the 20's.

In the years since, we've had a lot of yuck especially on the defensive side of things.

Our D and D philosophy has really been letting us down as far as blue chippers go. Need Kenny Clark or Josh Jones or Kevin King to be one. We just don't have the horsepower especially on D.

I'm tired of pinning hopes on defensive improvement on guys like Davon House, Josh Hawkins and Herb Waters (IR). You may say who was pinning their hopes on Herb Waters? The team apparently was as they were high on this converted WR. Heck, we pinned hopes on Blake Martinez and Jake Ryan...these are two middling guys. It's been awhile since Clay has been Clay. It would be nice to have one guy on D who you really know is a superstar. Mike Daniels is very good but not a superstar like Woodson once was.

Love seeing us get good players later in the draft. However, the stars are mostly found up high. I tire of hearing people say that we can't get blue chippers because of our low draft position but then turn around and praise great drafting acumen in late rounds. If you can find a very good player in Rounds 4-7 or via UDFA you sure in the heck better to find as good or better in Rounds 1-3 and we simply haven't. That's a fact. We don't use FA, traditionally, to add stars. Marty B. was necessitated by Cook wanting too much money. So, where are these blue chippers going to come from? Where?

Check this for some perspective: (You'll notice things drop off dramatically after Round 3)

I would count Nick Perry, good edge rushers are premium in this league and he was a UFA who was getting paid whether it was here or elsewhere so it wasn't just because of no one behind him. His only concern is health not talent.

Haha would be next up and he's IMO VERY close. Hayward looks like a blue chip player in a different defense which is unfortunate.

I don't think Davante will necessarily become one of the best WR in the league or anything but he's good enough that he's easily worth the pick. I wouldn't count him though.

The previous 3 seasons are really too early to tell. I still think Rollins is going to be a good CB but I have some concerns with Randall. Montgomery if he could stay healthy would be a great RB but at this point i'm not sure that will ever happen.

We did get blue chip players in the 4th round in 2012 and 2013. Also JC Tretter has the talent and ability to be a top 10 center but more health issues there.

Perry is talented, I love the guy, but I can see he is not a star in this league. I understand someone was going to overpay him just like Davon House was going to be, but this time it was us.

Again, if we can find very good players like Daniels and Bakhtiari and Tretter in Rounds 4-7 there is no reason we can't find better guys up top and that is my lament. Our very poor drafting up high has stifled this team especially on D. The amount of picks, high ones, on D to get us what we have is criminal. Judging on that alone taking the god like power of Aaron on offense, everyone in the org would and should be fired for what we have on defense after what we've done for it. From Ted to MM to Dom to Joe Whitt etc. It's a disgrace.

This ride is going to end sometime soon and it would be nice to notch another taste of glory before it does. What we've been doing to get it is highly suspect and invites a ton of scrutiny as more and more data becomes available.

This initial analysis is guided by emotion, selectively cherry-picked and still WRONG. 😂

First, it’s all relative! A GM that drafts 3 HOFers/yr sucks if every other team gets 5. So let’s compare to the next best: NE.

Second, let’s take the emotion out and get more empirical.

If we take top 3 players drafted per year since 2011 we find GB players have netted 5 PBs and NEs only 3 [Per pro football reference]. There are no AP1s for either team. Note: 60% are still w/ GB; 33% for NE.

Also, in 1st round NE drafted at an average of #24.8; GB 27.3. In second round NE averaged drafting at 54.25; GB 57.3.

So Ted drafting 3 full spots behind NE in 1st and 2nd rounds has still netted 2 more PB seasons from players.

I don't think a draft is better if you get a blue chipper in the 1st round and a turd in the 4th than one where you get a turd in the first and a blue chipper in the 4th. Same net effect on your roster. Every draft is different too, some you'll get bust city in the first round league wide with some fantastic unknown development guys in middle/later rounds. Some times you'll have 10-15 phenomenal first round talents in the draft and then a gap for a round or so.

I mean if the bar is set at players who are better at their position than Nick Perry is as an Edge that doesn't leave a whole lot of players out there that we've actually missed on.

The notion that the Packers are failing because they haven't landed blue chip talent at the end of the rounds one two and three I feel is misguided criticism.

It's not much different than those pounding the door of SIGN FREE AGENTS, as if there are plethora of talented players readily available. They are FREE agents for a reason.
