If he had been drafted outside the top 10 I think most people would be calling it a good solid pick. The fact that everyone was expecting so much more out of him as a #5 overall pick is unfortunate for him.

Say what you will about his performance there were not many people who showed up and gave it their all like he did week after week and he took took it in the wallet a couple of times to stay in Green Bay.

Sure I would have liked to have seen a lot more out of him but I'm perfectly fine with the career he had here.

That said, I agree that he was a good player for the Packers. His production here throughout his GB career is impressive and well worthy of a retirement contract.

I never understand how anchoring the defense for 9 years, becoming the teams leading tackler in history, and being available for every game during his time on the team is failing to deliver.

Again, I'm not saying Hawk was a bad player. He was just a very average MLB/ILB. Dependable, with very few flashes of the guy he was at Ohio State, but a guy that did always play his heart out for us.

Also, I'm not that big a fan of longevity records.

With all due respect for Donald Driver, who was an excellent player and person, he's nowhere close to Sterling Sharpe or James Lofton in skill. A guy like Emmitt Smith looks average compared to Barry Sanders, skillwise.

A lack of longevity and availability is a big problem and there's something to be said about availability, but just being available is a feat a lot of players can do.

How many times did people complain that Hawk made the tackle but it was 6-7 yards down field? Some of that is on him and his pursuit angle. Some of it because he is a LBer not a DT.

But it was also pretty well said that he wasn't going to be the guy who comes in and gets drastically better. Heck he wasn't even drafted to be the leader of the defense because we already had that in Nick Barnett. He ended up becoming that after changing defenses.

I remember reading scouting reports about him being the best player in the draft after Reggie Bush. The safest pick to make the HOF. Okay, those were a bit overboard, but I certainly didn't see a single scouting report that Hawk would turn into way more of a reactionary player with seemingly lesser instinct than he had in college.

Hawk turned out to be a decent and dependable player, but I just can't see why anyone would think that we got what we expected at pick 5.

And if you mean scouts, GMs, fans and everyone else by the people, I very much agree with you, but I don't very much see your point. That's pretty much a statement that rings true of every single player ever drafted.

EDIT: I have a hard time finding proper scouting reports, but this article gives a decent feel for the opinion about Hawk at the time.

beast (30-Dec) : Well, Commanders are currently the 6th seed and Packers the 7th
beast (30-Dec) : Who was it in Chat, that wanted the Vikings to win (because Lions fans upset them) because Packers could not lose the 6th seed?
beast (30-Dec) : If Falcons win, Packers stay as the 6th seed and Falcons lead the NFCS, if they lose, Commanders 6th and Bucs take NFCS lead
beast (30-Dec) : Win or Loss, the NFCS is going down to week 18
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : if the Falcons win, how does that affect the overall NFC playoff picture? Does it mean that the NFC South comes down to week 18?
