The Bennett deal will have a cap around 5M in 2017, which will leave us about 18.7M to spend.

Though I think that'll cost us our 5th rnd comp pick.

Cook's agent screwed up big time as Steve said. This is really really good. I cant imagine any team paying more than what GB was offering to Cook [3-4M per]. This is the type of thing that can end an agent's career if he doesn't have solid track record. The agent needs to save face and he can do this by back-loading a 3-4M per deal with some huge numbers to bring average up and, of course, Cook will never see it. If the back-loading gets Cook's deal up to 6M per; then we'll get the comp pick back we lost for signing Bennett. And if Cooks deal is, EG, 30M for 5 years with 18M in last 2 years, that could net a 4th rounder.

Best case: We get Bennett for Cook [huge upgrade] and trade our 5th comp pick for a 4th!

I think what I said was if we JUST resign our own we don't get better. Sure we can get better by drafting youngsters and them developing into studs. The issue is, you have to hit on them and they have to fall into the positions where we need to improve.

If you look at draft history, getting 3 starters out of a draft class is an excellent draft. With 22 starters offense and defense it would take over 7 drafts to fill a team with drafted starters at every position. Assuming you don't lose any to injury and none of them were in positions where the team already had the starters. I'm pretty sure, no team has ever been that successful and lucky in the draft. Drafting and developing is a good strategy to build a team, but eventually you get to a point where all you are doing is maintaining. Drafting new players into the depth to replace players you drafted just a few years ago. At that point you can no longer just draft the best players, you need to draft need and that has even lower success rates.

Ted needs to keep drafting to keep the youth and talent in the development pool. But this team is past the stage where you can expect any drastic improvement just from the draft. Select players need to be brought into positions of need through FA.

Then add Brice and Evans into that scenario. Dorleant. I bet one of those guys emerges. On the DL we lose Pennell and possibly Guion but Lowry emerged last year and Price looks to be ascending.

Still, it'd be nice to get some guys.

And Yooper we're not treading water. We're treading water only during the FA period, while so many other GMs are drowning. You dont have to out run the bear; you only have to out run the person your with.

We don't just have to outrun the bear in our own division, we have to out run ALL the bears in the NFL.
If you don't make serious upgrades in our team, we won't be able to do that.
Free agency is a chance to do that. Other teams have proven to do that in free agency. We could to, if Ted gets off his wallet and proves that winning another super bowl is the goal. Not just the "bottom line" as far as making money.
The clock is ticking on Aaron Rodgers. The chances of us getting a third HOF QB is almost impossible to do. So NOW is the time to go for it!

Cap space: 39M
Perry -6M
Bennett -3.4M
Kendricks -1M [estimated]
Barclay -800K
Draft -2M
Bank for season -7M
Cap space left to spend: 18.8M

Added Picks [Max we can get is 4]:
Cook?
Lang 5th rounder [Estimate]
Solid 5th round-Hyde**
Solid 5th round-Tretter
Borderline 7th Round-Peppers*

Picks subtracted from added picks:
Borderline 4th/5th-Bennett**
Kendricks doesn’t count against comp pick formula

*Peppers signed a 1 yr 3.5M deal- Only 32 Comp picks are awarded to the 32 largest FA loses by contract not offset by the teams singing other FAs. This year’s #31 went to Denver for Mathis [1 yr 4M] and #32 went to Denver for Bruton [3yrs 9M]. So Peppers 3.5 last year would have been #32, it might not be next year.

** I was too exuberant on Hyde’s deal based on deals of years past. This year the last 4th rounder went to Indy for the Fleener loss [7.2M per] and first 5th rounder went to Cincy for Sanu loss [6.5M]. So Hyde’s 6M will probably be a solid 5th. If Bennett’s deal is 7M per and he plays well it will probably cancel a 4th rounder if we get one, or if we don’t, it’ll cancel one of the 5th rnd pick. If Bennett’s deal is 6.2M per, then he’ll only cancel a 4th.

I find it disturbing that Thompson found it necessary to sign an RFA fullback while the defense goes mostly ignored.
But this is Turd Thompson at the helm.
This guy was such an important piece of the puzzle that I can't even remember his name although I just read it this morning.

Mucky Tundra (13h) : if the Eagles get it down to the 1, do they Tush Push or give it to Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : 49ers have a money problem if they want to sign their QB
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Wait for real? Didn't he just get an extension two years ago?
Zero2Cool (13h) : 49ers gonna trade Deebo. Interesting
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : Replays always never seem to show the holdings

Mucky Tundra (14h) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (14h) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (14h) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (14h) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (14h) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (14h) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (14h) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (14h) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (14h) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (14h) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (14h) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (14h) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (14h) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (15h) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (15h) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
Mucky Tundra (15h) : this game is over
Mucky Tundra (15h) : This might be the kill shot here
Mucky Tundra (15h) : oh that's such a bad penalty for KC after getting the 3rd down stop
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : Philly DL has come to play
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : Ceoper DeJean with the INT scored...bad memories of draft night
Mucky Tundra (15h) : ok scratch that
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Game feels like last years Super Bowl: 49ers started off in control, moved the ball well but didn't have much of a lead to show for it
