Now maybe you people will understand why i say we sign players this year from the free agent market and not worry about Jennings and Collins. Actually ironic that they have Jennings pictured for the story.

A general manager told me that the projections for players scheduled to be free agents -- if it were a capped year -- could be upwards of 170 fewer players if it is uncapped. Every player from the 2005 draft who signed a five-year contract and every player who signed a four-year deal in 2006 would miss out on eligibility for free agency and revert back to their club as a restricted free agent. Keep in mind, teams target this group over all others when it comes to spending the big money in free agency.

here is the rest of the story:

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I read that a couple days ago. It would help us re-sign those guys, but a lack of salary cap would end up hurting the packers in the long run.

Well i was just bringing up this because alot of posters are making the comments of not being able to resign Jennings and Collins. We will get killed if they go a few years without a cap, we just don't have the money of the Jones and Synder and Davis's of the league.

I just hope there will be a cap in place again soon. As much as this may help us, I still don't like it.

I love the parity (Got it right this time) in the NFL and I would hate for anything to change it. Now I don't know excactly how this works, but I don't want to look like the soccer leagues.

soccer leagues will be what it looks like if owners/players can't negotiate a cap.

I hope and believe there will be no uncapped year. A reasonable, CBA agreement is best for both the teams/Owners and the players.

That being, Packers have a discretionary fund. That can be used if it comes down to an uncapped year. Last I heard that was about 250 million. While the Packers would not go on a spending spree, they would use it to keep players that the organization deems important.

If Jennings and Colins are not locked up prior, the team would have the means to retain them.

well yes, pfwt. but the point of the thread is that if 2010 is uncapped, Jennings and Collins won't be able to sign anywhere else, because in an uncapped year, a player cannot become an unrestricted free agent until after 6 years in the league. If next season is uncapped, they would become exclusive rights free agents, like Ryan Grant last year. He needed a new contract but it had to be with the packers.

True, but the biggest worry facing uncapped years is can the Packers afford to keep up with the Joneses, or the Joneses and Snyders. If teams start paying their WR 20 million, Jennings is going to want that.

If it comes to that and the Packers need to tender Jennings, the result is going to make it that much more difficult to do a long term deal with him. Disgruntled players is not a good thing.

Bad for the NFL, bad for the owner's... Salary cap saved the NHL ... it could kill the NFL. I hate leagues with no salary cap, it's just not fair ... richest owner always have advantage.
Glad To Be A Packers Fan.

dfosterf (18-Aug) : We do have good depth at running back imo. Still so frustrating. Bitching about it is a futile excercise, which I plan to do anyway.

TheKanataThrilla (9-Aug) : NFL Network is broadcasting the game tonight, but not in Canada. Not sure why as no local television is showing the game.
beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
