Packers pick outside linebacker Kyler Fackrell in third round; ignore inside linebacker

My take: General manager Ted Thompson is apparently confident in Sam Barrington and Jake Ryan as his starting inside linebackers. Or maybe this inside linebacker class did nothing for him. Either way, Thompson ignored what was one the Packers’ biggest perceived needs.

No more Neal: The selection of Fackrell likely means the end of Mike Neal's tenure in Green Bay, something the veteran free agent outside linebacker acknowledged on Twitter shortly after the third round ended on Friday. Neal has made free-agent visits to Detroit and Seattle but remains unsigned.

Walters OLB ranking

8. Kyler Fackrell, OLB, Utah State
Height: 6-4. Weight: 244. Arm: 32.25. Hand: 10.25.
40 Time: 4.72.
Projected Round (2016): 2-3.
4/27/16: In 2015, Fackrell had 82 tackles with 15 for a loss and four sacks. He is a well-balanced defender who can contribute in both phases. Fackrell has the ability to drop into pass coverage and blitz off the edge. At the Senior Bowl, he had a quietly impressive week. Fackrell did not stand out at the combine.

I'm wondering how they are going to use Fackrell.

Clearly he has some pass rush and coverage ability talent, but is he physical and strong enough for nickel edge role where he'll be forced to physical hold his own, and need a good bull rush at times... and quick enough to change directions enough in coverage?

I feel like Fackrell perfectly fits an aggressive 4-3 OLB role that blitzes a lot. But the Packers don't have that role.

My only complaint about this pick is how the NFL Network completely screwed his selection. Absolutely pissed to wait for the pick then they go to commercial and interview and announce the selection as a ticker. This was the first pick that they didn't announce live.

Most sport television packages however comes with NFL Network which is excellent.

Who was the Packer that announced Fackrell?

Unfortunately missed the chat last night. Was at the in-laws, but watched the Draft there. Was probably another reason why I was annoyed. We didn't leave as I wanted to see the pick.

Like the first two picks more than this one. And it's really not his fault, just not enthusiastic about a 25 year old with a previous ACL injury as a 3rd round pick.

Now for the race-based comparison... Brady Poppinga? He was older when drafted by the Packers too.

He looks like an intriguing pick. He will need to build strength. It's kind of surprising he still needs to develop his body after spending almost 7 years in a collegiate strength building program. He may be more of a contributor in 1-2 seasons once Peppers retires.

I love this kid. When I first saw Cin trade in front and select a USU LB [Vigil], I wanted them dead, then realized he was the wrong one. Though I liked Vigil in rnd 5-6. I cant believe Kyler-maker made it to our 3rd rnd pick, I liked him in 2nd.

This guy plays everywhere, left, right, inside on line, ILB, lines up wide, plays TE man, good awareness in zone. Often, he lines up in one spot and runs around just before snap as USU game plans to free him up. He's CM3 chasing down runs from backside and he a nice bull rush, great outside move, he violent with his hands to disengage.

Yet, here's his best quality: With all this testosterone driven crap he does, stuff that usually brings out the inner stat whore in most; that is not who this guy is. He holds the edge like no college kid I've seen, he knows his assignment and he carries them out to an unpissingly believable level. He is a team first guy.

When he gets bulked up, he's a bit frail now, we'll have another 1st contract stud.

As he is now, he has the skill to play inside, but he's a thin-245. After 1 year in weight program, then I think he could play inside.
