Given that I think the one player on Nerd's list here that are first round value (Billings) is going to be long gone by #27, I'm hoping that there's a trade partner, which may be wishful thinking on my part.

I think the best shot at a trade will come because someone needs to get a quarterback sooner rather than later and didn't want to spend what it took to get Wentz/Goff higher in the first but is willing to reach for Lynch, Cook, or Hackenberg. Yes, I mean you, Jerry Jones and John Elway. :)

If the Packers get Billings/Johnson or any of the other highly regarded D-lineman I'll be happy. Everyone has been raving about the DL talent this year i'd be a little surprised if T.T. doesn't make one of them his first pick.

Unless Billings or Rankins are available at the #27 spot, I am on the same page as you with the Jaylon Smith pick. He has experience in moving from position to position, playing outside and inside. He's fast and has great coverage abilities. He would be a slight liability in taking on offensive linemen in the run game (if he's playing inside) but the positives outweigh the negatives.

I think taking him late in the 1st spoils a lot of team's idea of letting him drop in the 2nd and taking him there.

I hope I am right that they may jump back into round 1 for a QB.

Here's my updated list of First Round targets.

statwhore

UPDATE: 4/27/26, The Packers need DTs moreso than pure NTs. Raji retired, but they’ve got Guion and Pennell. Moving Datone to elephant means they have a shortage of DTs, so I’ve weighted my choices more in that direction. I’d still like a bookend, though. There’s enough depth at Dline to pick somebody up in a later round.

Jaylon Smith is still my fallback guy. If all my guys are taken, no one will give us value for a trade back, I don’t hesitate to pull the trigger on Smith despite the recent medical news that he is expected to miss the 2016 season. Otherwise, look for him in the third.

Of the guys who are likely to be around at #27,I like Noah Spence, Darron Lee, Kevin Dodd, Jarran Reed, Kenny Clark, Andrew Billings, Austin Johnson, Austin Hooper, A’Shawn Robinson, Chris Jones

Noah Spence: He’s had some youthful indiscretions, but seems to have pulled it together. He’s also got skills and he can get it done.

Darron Lee: This guy could easily go higher, but if he’s there take him. We need a bookend.

Kevin Dodd: Another book end type dude. Could go higher, has versatility as 4/3 DE.

Jarran Reed: This guy can get it done.

Kenny Clark: He’s got skills, but is kind of a “try hard” guy, nothing real flashy, just gets it done.

Andrew Billings: This guy can stuff the run in short yardage. SO sick of teams knowing they can get short yardage on us.

Austin Johnson: Another NT who could make our ILBs look much better.

Austin Hooper: Can’t ever have enough of these pass catching TEs. Apparently. I also wouldn’t mind Hunter Henry or Jerell Adams.

A’Shawn Robinson: He’s got skills but gets sloppy with technique. Takes plays off.

Chris Jones: Doesn’t always play up to ability. But he’s got plenty of ability.

But generally, any of the guys who are highlighted on my draft board.

To me, Darren Lee is a heavy SS, and smaller SS can be found later in the draft and might be some what close in coverage skills.

I'm not a fan of Kevin Dodd, his only claim to 1st round pick is that he had 7 sacks in his last 7 or so games. Which were mostly against RTs whose strength was run blocking and weaknesses in pass blocking. And some of them made Barclay's pass blocking look good. I think Dodd is a developmental 4-3 LDE.

Kenny Clark, I just don't see the high potential in him. Does he have the potential to be great?

I need to review Austin Hooper more, but I think he could be in the same boat as Clark. Hooper is very well rounded, but does he have great potential? Hooper's teammate WR Devon Cajuste doesn't have the blocking down but he has the size for H-back TE type, and possibly could be much better in the passing game and had later. Plus TEs have said blocking can be taught. (Though I disagree, that not everyone can be taught to block well)

I like most of the DTs, that are on the list.

Spence: This team has a positive environment for dudes with checkered pasts. Fact is, we need a bookend, and we have all these years. Clay doesn't even REALLY have it anymore. We need someone who can attack the QB. If he's a little bit crazy, so much the better.

Dodd: Agreed, but Dom can't get enough of these 4-3 DEs who can set the edge against the run but can neither cover nor get to the QB. At least he can get to the QB, imo.

Lee: Also agreed on him, and he may be close to maxing out his frame, although I think he could reasonably get up to at least 230-235. Still, "converted safety" is a trend now, and he can cover.

Kenny Clark I just added, being that we need an end. He's a safe pick, A'Shawn Robinson and Chris JOnes have higher ceilings, but also lower floors. Our 3-4 system is for Dlinemen like Clark, we want them to eat up blocks and let the LBs make the plays.

I wouldn't take Smith in the 1st round. Too big of a gamble and likely to be there in the 2nd and not sure I would jump in there.
The other one I don't get on the list for me is Hooper. Everything I have seen is that he is the the 3rd rated TE and ranked no better on any top 100 board than 60th to 80th that I could find. Take him in the 2nd or 3rd maybe.

Out of the rest of the players on the list I see Ted Thompson drafting at least 3 players in the front 7 whether that's an Interior DL, ILB, OLB, or DE so most of those you have are good possibilities at 27.

Chris Jones is a gamble IMO. I have read where there are questions about his desire and commitment. Daniel's would either get that straight or eat him. Just not sure which. I would rather draft a few on defense with that fire in their gut like Daniels and let them feed off each other. I think they need that.

I wouldn't consider Kenny Clark just a block eater. The guy can live in the other teams backfield. His bull rush is one of the best I've seen from a DL prospect in any draft I've paid attention to. Would be fine with me if we nabbed him at 27
