For all those expecting a urgent push for FA signings.. you might find this interesting.

Coy or matter of fact?

I wonder what a Helter Skelter Ted Thompson would look like.

More here..

Thompson, though, says implementing the change won't be so big of a deal.

"A veteran coach who coached the 3-4 for a long time said the only change is that one end plays with his hand up instead of on the ground," explained Thompson.

Other changes Packers fans have clamored for in the offseason has been one in personnel.

Much talk has come about trying to acquire defensive free agents like Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers, Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and Baltimore linebacker Bart Scott.

Thompson, however, might not be changing his free agent philosophy for this off-season.

"I don't think it's going to be the helter skelter that everyone is anticipating," said Thompson.

beauty of thompson is that he has his game face perfected. if he was helter skelter, i don't think we'd be able to tell the difference.

Oh great the Master Ted Thompson is already showing his hand and saying he won't get any big name free agents and will get the players thru the draft. Well if he does that i hope he has a backup plan for the new team he will be a gm for in 2010.

"Free agency is interesting and helpful. It's more important because it affects your team more. It effects the locker room. You need to be careful. The draft is more long term."

In recent years, the Packers have been able to sign more free agents than they actually did, with large sums of money left underneath the salary cap.

That has brought criticism upon Thompson for not doing "all he can" to try to improve the team.

"I don't pay much attention to it," said Thompson. "You have to stay on your plan. You can't sway every time the wind blows."
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

OMG! What does he know?! None of our guys can play in a 3-4! We're doomed!

</fan over-reaction>

I think he's being coy, or more to the point, I don't think he's dumb enough to telegraph his plans and screw any leverage the organization might have.

I now cede the floor to the anti-Thompson brigade.

In this instance, "showing your hand" about being conservative, whether you're being honest or deceptive, doesn't really affect anything like the phrase "showing your hand" suggests it does. If he was showing his hand about wanting Suggs, for instance, then that would be a problem.

I wouldn't rule out Johnny Jolly either. I think he can play some end. I also think Thompson could look a Chris Canty whom is a free agent.

Cheesey you need to remember that DE is not a flashy position in the 3-4. Those guys aren't going to be getting the double digit sacks in this defense. It's the outside backers that should.

You have to have faith.

In faith, I do not mean the Lord. I mean in following the plan with faith that it will work.

I truly believe the Packers organization has faith in the road they have chosen to take, so this does not surprise me.

One thing I will add, and do not ask me why I feel this way, I just do. I think Harrell is going to have a great year.

Yeah I really don't understand why everyone is saying Harrell with start.

3-4 DE is usually like a small 4-3 UT. They can also be normal and big size 4-3 UT and Jolly has been starting at UT for a while not.

IMO Jolly and Jenkins are going to be the starters unless harrell shows a lot in camp or Jolly's legal trouble.

I was bout to say the same thing. This will twist the nipples of many Ted Thompson haters.

Anyways, if he WAS going to dip into free agency why would he just come out and say it? I agree with you.

What I foresee is that the DE's and NT will be one group and still be in a rotation like the DTs did. Pickett, Jolly, Jenkins, Harrell and hopefully a FA or early draft pick. Still using the rotation to keep them as fresh as possible and mixing up where they line up. Sometimes moving the NT to the outside, hopefully forcing the double to be from the guard/Tackle allowing the OLB to match up against a TE/FB/RB.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!
