Pro Football Focus misses mark on Aaron Rodgers' grade

The website does some solid work breaking down every play in every NFL game, but it missed the mark on its analysis of Rodgers' performance in the Green Bay Packers’ 38-28 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Almost seems like they're not counting those "free plays," because they are riskless. But Mike and Aaron are definitely game planning that shit.

Other teams better self scout their tape and make sure they're getting off the field in time.

The best line from MNF crew. "With free plays Alex Smith throws interceptions, Rodgers throws touchdowns."

Aaron Rodgers threw 11 passes that traveled 10 or more yards and only 5 of them were completed. If this were any one else, we'd be jumping all over him calling him the CheckDownKing.

According to Football Outsiders he was the best QB of week 3.

Rodgers was very effective throwing very short. On passes within 2 yards of the line of scrimmage, he went 7-of-7 for 75 yards. Three of those completions went for touchdowns, three others went for first downs, and the other was a 7-yard gain on first-and-10. Mind you, Rodgers was also very good throwing very deep. On passes that traveled at least 13 yards downfield, he went 5-of-7 for 143 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown. He was virtually perfect at the goal-line; inside the Kansas City 10, he went 4-of-5 for 19 yards and four touchdowns. The Packers have the best quarterback in football, and they weren't afraid to use him -- seven of Rodgers' first eight passes came on first down.

Stats and grades are information and depending on how well we can adapt big picture and context to the grades (or stats) determines how informal it will be.

The stat types I dislike are when they say Player X has more TD's than any other player when the sun is out and the temperature is between 50° and 67° over the last 27 games. I mean, can you be more obvious that you're targeting an agenda here? I called out ESPN Statistics on this just recently about Adrian Peterson on Twitter. This is when stats and grades are useless.

I prefer stats or grades that analyze the big spectrum of things, not a targeted spectrum angling for an agenda. That's how stats get a raw deal. You ever notice there is a first time for everything with nearly every game? If the Packers score here it'll be the first time in the NFL a team with the vowels A and E have scored in a dozen straight first quarter games at home without snow!!! So freaking useless.

I don't care (much) about stats. There's an eyeball test.

The eyeball can assess how Aaron bought time in/out of the pocket, what he audibled out to, how well he led receivers, how he looked off a safety, the 12 man penalty and offsides that he baited the defense into - yes they're "risk-free" but he facilitated those high percentage opportunities. The stats don't assess these things.

I appreciate that PFF was trying to avoid obligatory "attaboys," and I don't really care what their assessment was, it doesn't impact anyone. That said, it's pretty hard to watch for 3 hours on Monday and conclude AR had an average performance.

The eye test tells me all I need to know.
Rodgers played well and the Packers won.
Damn the meaningless statistics.

So throwing 11 passes 10 or more yards and completing less than half of them is a great game? Only 11 of his 30+ passes traveled more than 9 yards in the air! NINE YARDS! Aaron Rodgers completed passes that you throw with your 9 year old son in the backyard and fans are crowning him for some major achievement.

It is really fascinating that some of us can't be objective about this performance. If it was Jay Cutler, he would be ripped to shreds by the same EYE BALL testing geniuses out there. But since it's Aaron Rodgers, we have to bow down and guzzle Koolaid like an alcoholic does Vodka.

Personally, I find it encouraging that Aaron Rodgers could play around an average game and Packers still come out with a win. And that objective view should scare the piss out of the NFL because Aaron will NOT be average every week.

The NFL is on notice. Aaron is coming ... and you cannot stop him.

dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
