Second year tight end Richard Rodgers may not be as athletically gifted as Jermichael Finley was, but he makes up for anything he lacks with shear consistency. The guy just does everything well and, at least early into his career, has some really sure hands. He will definitely be a safety net for QB Aaron Rodgers, especially with security blanket Jordy Nelson sidelined for the year.

Good review.

My takeaways:

The Good

I am thinking this Gunter hype is for real. Not only is he playing well and tight he is also doing so without getting flagged.

Beautiful pick by Randall with timing and body position over a bigger player.

Ripowski. Great ST plays. Would have liked to see them run him with the offense in a short yardage situation.

The Bad

Barclay and our OL. That safety scared the shit out of me. Especially after Jordy left.

The DL still left me unimpressed. Pittsburgh lost 2 OL starters and it still looked like they could push us back at will.

Mathsay. What the hell happened? There was a time he was one of the most underrated guys on our team and managed to pin the opponents deep. There is something not right in either his mechanics or his head.

The Ugly

Maybe it was a coincidence that so many guys got hurt, but that field looked like it had problems with guys and their footing. The Lacy td has him slipping and he was pretty much untouched.

Jordy. We were celebrating how dominate we were going to be because our offense could outscore teams and even our lackluster D couldn't detract from the juggernaut. Now if we have to settle for FGs and we whiff on 3rd downs that Jordy was a key contributor can we get it done? Not to sound doom and gloom, but losing Jordy has me thinking we will not have the team to get it done in the playoffs if we even make it there. FFS...

If it weren't for the elephant in the room of the Nelson situation, we might be discussing Alonzo Harris and/or Neal. Harris really showed up with what we know he is good at - running hard, and he really floundered at what he is known to be weak at - catching passes - shades of the old boxer, Manos de Piedra. Do we keep him over Rajon Neal who does everything fairly good, but just ain't very special? I'd go with Harris - he is more likely to learn to catch than Neal is to get stronger.

Too bad his last name is Neal...that means he'll be hurt all the time.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

Gunter was undrafted... Isn't it incredible?

As you said without the elephant in the room I'd like to rescue several good plays by Adrian Hubbard. I think he brings a lot of extras to the packages where he plays, his size alone is an obstacle for the QB to see the middle of the field. He and Elliot are playing quite well. I believe Elliot is a lock and I'm begining to think Hubbard's chances are above 50%.

I'm worried about the safeties. Constantly out of position, unable to predict the development of the play, late at tackling, doing strange things... This might be a weak spot this season unless something changes.

The fact that Ripkowski is making such nice plays in STs and that he is not on the field on the offense even for the 2nd or 3rd team makes me believe Kuhn is a lock and Ripkowski is also going to be in the team but for some reason he can't play offense.

I'd keep Harris over Neal if I needed a RB but I'm keeping Neal over Harris because we already have 2 good RBs and Neal is a good situational player.

Had a pretty good return.

That's a plus for him in the battle for 3rd rb.
Kuhn showed why he is still valuable with some great blocks
.
Ripkowski was drafted for his ST play, I think he is a lock and Will Take over for Kuhn next year.
