It would have helped the tight end position for sure, but it would make our already suspect defense even worse.

I'm not saying it would have been the best move but I would not have been up in arms over it.

For me the question is, did he take himself out in crunch time to get back at the coaches for making him play ILB? Because if so, we don't need him.

Just to play devils advocate. Wouldn't it be considered doing the team thing, if he doesn't think he can play better then the guy sitting behind him, and having faith in his teammates?

If anything it shows a lack of foresight on his part to even say that in this circumstance. I kinda thought he was smarter than that.

I think the most interesting piece from the entire article was the quote that there was something to him not being voted as a Captain going into the playoffs. There is no greater indictment on his attitude than his teammate's perception of him. I have never considered Matthews a team first guy, mostly just a feeling after watching him get a half sack or someone else get to the QB right before him. I'm not so sure that this move to MLB won't send him over the edge if his sack numbers don't return to peak levels.

IMO, Matthews wants a spot in Canton more than a ring on his finger.

My comment earlier about him losing some of his luster for me has nothing to do with this instance. Truth be told I do think that if Clay felt he could contribute at a high level he would have been out there. As others have said he has often played with a reckless abandon that shows little regard for his body. I don't think that is in question with anyone. Where the question comes in is at what point does he start listening to his body when it starts to tell him to take a rest. Is it sooner than some other players. Yes he plays through pain and injury like almost every other player but does he give in to that pain and injury sooner than others. That's a question only he can answer and when he says stuff like looking out for #1 it makes one wonder.

Clay alone made the statements on worrying about number one and just having Clay on the field could have opened a lane for another Packer defender to make a game changing play. There is plenty of fingers to point on the meltdown in Seattle but for Clay to make the statements he did really makes a guy question the heart of CM3.

I do agree though that the way he said whatever he was trying to say comes off terribly and is certainly not something you want to hear from a player who is supposed to be a team leader. Until I see him actually half assing it on the field though it's hard to criticize him because he does give 100% out there. Visual evidence to me outweighs any quotes.

Favre played because it was about him and his longevity record. It defined him and he did anything not to miss a game regardless if it hurt the team, or not. I assure you Clay had no longevity record in mind when he decided he was too hurt and I also assure you a beat up Clay Matthews was better than anyone else behind him. Our ILB's were a JOKE. He very well could've stepped out to make a point.

Jack Youngblood must think this Matthews kid is the biggest p*ssy to ever hit the field. Everything clay said flies in the face of anything to do with the spirit of football...period. Spin it into it not being that bad if you must because he's a beloved Packer. It's pure trash and had a noteworthy Bear or Viking said you would be mocking him mercilessly. Heck, if a Cleveland Brown said it you would, too. Don't let your Packers allegiance blind you to the disgust of the statement.

Sounds like Clay had 2 options.

Option 1- play while hurt, at less than 100%. Have his performance reflect his body condition. Fans (alleged fans, anyway) will criticize because he sucks.

Option 2- Pull yourself from game because you feel your backup will contribute more than you can. Same alleged fans will say you suck for being selfish and worried about your stats.

Ever wonder why players don't embrace fans?

Steveishere's concussion theory is interesting to me and is the most plausible explanation I can see...he's taking one for the team to cover up for them not following concussion protocols. Of course that's all speculative.

The only other option I see is he was being soft. I don't see the harm in the org, or him reporting he had a verifiable injury, or at least viable concern at some point over the last 8 months, which could then explain this. That hasn't happened and all we have is his flimsy explanation which smells like a cover up...either of something like steve's concussion theory, or him wimping out.

Look for a piece on Profootballtalk.com here over the next few hours. Curious to read Florio's take as a known Packers hater due to being a lifelong Vikings fan.

Clay LOVES the fans...he helped me out 2 years ago. Prefer not to get into the details of what exactly it all entailed but he gave of his time on a request I made of him for someone who really appreciated what he did for them. He elevated an entire family. It involved him actively participating in something not sending out some signed pic, or something. One of the best feelings of my life to see/hear the impact of his involvement. So, I really have a soft spot for him as a person.

As a football player, I think it's reprehensible to make that comment. I don't see him the same as a football player while seeing him the same as a person off of it.

This is only an issue in my mind if a severely banged up Clay Matthews is more effective than his replacement. Reminds me of a handful of times Brett went out there and was completely ineffective but just had to keep playing.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
