With an arrest for vandalism, hit-and-run, and DUI raising issues under both the substance-abuse policy and the Personal Conduct Policy and given that Smith was suspended nine games last year under both policies, it could make sense to wait and see what happens between Smith and the league before giving him serious consideration.

But who knows, if Peppers goes or retires once he gets his Super Bowl ring this year, the Packers might be able to use another FA signing ... but really... it's not going to happen. The Packers reportedly thinking about getting rid of Jolly (their own guy) but decided to ask their own guys first and their own guys said, heck yeah bring him back. Packers aren't going to give that same option to an outsider (at least I don't think so).

And yeah there was Koren Robinson... but Koren Robinson was drafted by Thompson (sorta) when Thompson was with the Seahawks, were as far as I can tell Smith has no ties to Thompson. Of course the Bears defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio does have ties to Smith... but he might not be allowed to use those ties after he talked the GM and Owner into giving Ray McDonald a chance and McDonald failing to live up to the Bears expectations off the field.

Koren Robinson was a completely different scenario and doesn't even make sense to mention in terms of Aldon Smith. Aldon doesn't need a NFL team, he needs serious legitimate help with his addition and after he receives that, then and only then should he worry about an NFL career.

My guess is he ends up in Dallas. That DL will feature Hardy and Smith... with that O they have in Dallas they will be very dangerous. They did beat Seattle in Seattle last year.

Like beast said, a team will likely have to wait a year but the Cowboys may build a juggernaut living off of others teams star character issue cast offs.

Aldon Smith is a very special talent. Guys like him don't come around very often. So sad he's mucked up his career this badly. FIVE arrests, already?

The odds the Packers land him much less make a serious run at him have to be near zero but the thought is intriguing to a fan of any NFL team. I would've dealt Clay for him plus picks minus the character issues.

Both have been stupid enough to get behind the wheel while under the influence of something multiple times, and both were cut from their team because of it, so it makes sense to mention to compare them when one suggest the Packers might look at Aldon Smith because they did sign Robinson after he did basically the same thing. Difference is Thompson knew Robinson and seemed to trust him where he doesn't seem to know Smith.

  • Koren Robinson had been suspended four games for violating the substance abuse policy in 2004 and completed an offseason alcohol rehabilitation program.
  • Robinson was arrested for drunk driving in May 2005

Cris Carter is one of the few true success stories in getting clean and being a top notch NFL player. Guys like him are few and far between. Justin Blackmon is another guy like Aldon Smith. He just can't shake his demons, either.

The odds of Aldon ever shaking his are incredibly slim. Guys who have had these kind of chances repeatedly and fail usually continue failing. I pray he finds faith and clings to it. That is how Cris Carter rebounded.

Johnny Jolly couldn't stay clean, either. Addiction is an absolute crippler to all means of truly living right.

I'm sure Ted Thompson would say they're "doing their due diligence just like we do on all players" type of thing just like all other 30 franchises will say (Niners excluded, obviously)... it says a lot that he got cut. The Niners knew what a star he was and they just lost Justin Smith to retirement. Their DL is in total shambles without him yet they had to move on.

Usually, I'm first in line banging the drum for giving guys a shot here but I can't say I feel that in this particular instance.

More on Aldon Smith. I don't think it's too shocking the 49ers released him. Hell, they are probably hoping for a top five pick with all the changes and retirements and chopping off the near 8 figure salary of someone you can't trust? Easy decision.

At this point Smith needs to be in a jail cell, not the Packers locker room.

That org didn't stand behind him through all this if he wasn't supremely talented...

Decision appeared to be crushing if you watched Tomsula's presser.
