Gunter had another of those attention-grabbing – and football-grabbing – plays on Thursday, staying stride-for-stride with WR Jeff Janis on a deep post and snatching away QB Aaron Rodgers’ slightly underthrown ball for an interception. It marked the second time this camp that Gunter has picked off the reigning NFL MVP, but McCarthy dampened some of the post-practice enthusiasm about him with his reply to a question about the play and Gunter’s camp so far.

Jason Wilde  wrote:

So the dude who went undrafted ran stride for stride with Jeff Janis. Just goes to show how 40 times aren't necessarily the same way people run in pads, when they are on a football field.

Janis does have adequate straight line speed, but I think it takes him too long to accelerate. Also, going up after the ball seems to still be an issue. Still, with Abbrederis down, he has a shot to make the team as the #6 guy.

Monty on the other hand seems to be lighting it up:

Play of the day: Where have we heard this before? Oh, that’s right, it seemingly happens every day. On Thursday during an 11-on-11 no-huddle session, rookie WR Ty Montgomery fully extended on the right sideline to reel in a 45-yard completion from No. 2 QB Scott Tolzien. Entering camp, most assumed that Montgomery’s impact would be as the kickoff returner. With what he’s shown as a receiver during the first six practices, his offensive opportunities should only grow as he learns the offense.

Until Abby can stay healthy for a month (or at the very least two weeks), I think Janis should be in front of Abby, which in my mind would make Janis the current 5th guy.

Of course, I guess there is also WR White if Janis hasn't learn enough as White seems like a pretty good route runner and I was surprised some team didn't claim White last year as I thought he might be able to be a #4 WR on some NFL teams with less depth.

So, Monty is already penciled in as the 4th and Janis is 6th at best? I would like to see video of the Janis/Gunter "stride for stride" play.

Still, it's exciting to hear Ty is acclimating so quickly. Shouldn't be that big of a surprise considering he's from a major program that is known for it's academics.

Gunter sure gets talked about a lot. I don't think I've read Randall Cobb's name or Davante Adams name so far this year other than a quote from Aaron Rodgers. None of these media guys are talking about our top WR's.

White is a freaking pencil. He makes Todd Pinkston look like Hercules. Abby ain't much bigger. I think Myles White would have a tough time making it through an NFL season if he played regularly.

If I'm in the media or a fan at camp, I don't need to confirm that Cobb and Daniels are really good - I want to know how the injured (Nelson, CM3), question marks (Raji) and rookies (Montgomery, Gunter, Rollins) are doing. At least that's my theory why we've heard more about them.

I'm with you, musccy. I'd rather hear about the lesser knowns and new guys. Hearing about Jimmie Hunt is the kind of thing I love. We added a ton of UDFA WR's and he was one I didn't even bother to check out until last night. Loved his clip. I read all about him and he sounded almost exactly like the guy I thought he looked like on one of the plays in his highlight reel.

Jimmie freaking Hunt. Gotta love this time of year.
