Favre deserves every accolade he receives, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend like 2009 and 2010 didn't happen. The hypocrisy of this fan base (like many) can easily be glossed over, but I seriously wonder how many of those people who were cheering for Favre in the stands yesterday were booing him back when he played for Minnesota when they came to town back then, burned his jersey, and got in on the "We'll Never Forget You Brent" meme that was rolling around the internet at the time. I was 100% in our front office's camp back in '08 when the whole divorce happened and have not waivered once on my feelings Ted Thompson made the right decision in trading him even if it did end up eventually allowing Favre to play for the Vikings.
I'm not going to downplay the 16 years Favre gave Green Bay. His stats, MVPs. achievements, and ring speak for themselves. Through good or bad, you know he gave it his all every week he suited up for the team. He was one major piece in a set of events and people that helped reset a franchise for the modern era that had been in disarray for a quarter century and helped spark a resurgence that has carried on to this day.
I also won't forget the Vicodin addiction, his retirement waffling for consecutive seasons that basically held the franchise hostage, the teary "retirement" only to change his mind at the last minute while the Packers were getting Aaron ready to play and lead to a very messy and public divorce from the team, sending dick picks to Ms. Sturger which I'm sure his wife wasn't too thrilled about, and his "retirement" from the Jets so he could go sign with Minnesota so he could finally "stick it" to Green Bay.
Call me a hater or whatever you like, but my emotions yesterday were very mixed. Time can heal some wounds and everything that is happening with him now was inevitable, but I'm not going to sit here and blindly cheer him like he did actually retire after 2007 and just gloss over everything he did afterward like it didn't matter. I cheered against him each of those 4 games he played against the Packers. I cheered against him in the in the '09 NFCCG when he threw that almost inevitable playoff killing INT and eventual FG that sent the Saints to the Super Bowl and the Vikings to another heart crushing playoff loss. I also felt a small sense of vindication as I watched Aaron hoist that SB trophy in 2010 knowing Minnesota had missed the playoffs, all the haters and Packer "fans" who jumped on Favre's bandwagon back the previous years and cheered for him while in New York or Minnesota and rooted against GB, who spit nothing but vitriol and hatred towards TT, MM, and Aaron for sending their lord and savior packing were proven once and for all wrong. That was a bit of poetic justice to me.
At the end of the day, I don't root for the individual player. I root for the colors, jersey, city, and franchise. Favre gave GB 16 great years, but the subsequent things he did in the following three after he left GB soured his legacy for me personally some. I'm happy he's back in the fold as a legend and will be treated as such going forward, but I won't sit here and pretend it was all gum drops and ice cream and there weren't a few bumps along the path to get there and why it took this long for this all to finally come together.
