Not surprising considering McCarthy is committed to giving lacy the rock a designated # of times whether its effective or not or costing us the game.

Throwing deep is only "stat whoring" if it isn't efficient yet you keep doing it. Since 2011 Rodgers hasn't been in the top 15 in % of passes that are deep passes yet he's been top 3 in accuracy in every season. That's the opposite of stat whoring.

Rodgers is really good at finding where a defense is weak and attacking the weakness. If a team is strong against deep passes he'll throw more short passes if a team is weak deep then he'll throw a lot of deep passes. This stuff about throwing short passes for the sake of throwing more short passes or running for the sake of running more is stupid. The most important thing is the specific teams you are playing. If they are playing a team that has shitty deep pass defense but really good against the run and short game should they try and force runs and short passes for the sake of not "stat whoring". Of course not, you should kill them deep until you win the game.

Passing is Passing - On just about every pass play, there are receivers going deep and receivers going short or mid-range. As was said, Aaron Rodgers, in addition to having magnificent accuracy and well above average escapability, has a knack for throwing to the right receiver based on who is open and what yardage is needed. THAT is what the Packers do best; THAT is what the Packers do better than just about anybody else now or in any era.

To the extent the title of the thread is true, it's a wrongheaded departure from what the Packers do so well - trading Great for mere Good - using a grind-it-out offense with a good, but not breakaway back running behind an OK but not dominant offensive line.

I like a lot about McCarthy, but if he REALLY is committed to the trend mentioned in the thread title, then ......... well, he damn well shouldn't be.

Sure, you gotta run the ball at times, but it should be very limited - a change of pace or when the game is in the bag and you are trying to run out the clock.
