We've all heard the adage that the NFL stands for "Not For Long.' Either you keep up and adapt, or you find a new line of work. Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy has received plenty of criticism for hanging onto loyalties and not making the change when he probably should have. The most [...]

I was going to say the same thing nerdmann. By his play calling you would think the opposite of the headline.

I think this article makes a lot of good points, but also misses at least one. How bold of a change was the practice schedule adjustment last year? A shorter week in an attempt to reduce injuries seemed to work out pretty well in its first year. Fingers crossed for another year without a significant injury problem.

And I don't really want to start a big argument about the play-calling business, but I think McCarthy is really good at it. Nobody likes to blame the players, but aren't they the ones that let us down in the final minutes in Seattle?

As Lombardi used to say: "The big word in professional football is execution. All plays succeed on the blackboard, but men make them work".

McCarthy to me has always been a top 5 playcaller except when the 4th quarter came around and he thought he had the #1 defense and rushing offense. Then the offense became so bland and predictable that failures are well noted. A few years back he actually addressed this issue in the offseason and swore he'd change his playcalling when they had the lead to be less "conservative". For a glorious season or two I think actually did play more loose in the 4th quarters and MM was truly earning his paycheck.

I think it takes guts though to give up the playcalling responsibilities when he's really under no pressure to change. My gut feeling with no actual proof is that Rodgers really wants to go "Manning" on the league and have more control of the calls. Thompson probably welcomes MM focusing more attention to the special teams and it keeps the star happy.

I think it'll work well. McCarthy will still have a large influence on the offensive schemes and Rodgers is probably ready to take on the bigger role. This is healthy progression.
