My issue has nothing to do with him being a Packer. My issue was with you calling him unathletic because of a 40 time. He definitely looks like an athlete on the football field.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

The guy has been in the NFL for 2 years. I guarantee nobody in the NFL cares about that 40 time from 2 1/2 years ago.

In fact, I doubt anyone on earth cares about that 40 time, except you.

You say that I'm defending him because he's a Packer, so I'll name other players who didn't have great 40 times that I consider "athletes.". You mentioned Chris Borland, he's an athlete. Greatest receiver of all time, Jerry Rice, didn't have a good 40 time. Pretty sure he's an athlete. Kam Chancellor ran a 4.64, which most people would call slow for a secondary player. I'm pretty sure no one is calling him unathletic.

Like I said before, my point is that you can't call someone unathletic due solely because of a 40 time. Regardless if they're a Packer or not.

Straight line 40 yard speed is useless. I mean, how often do you see players running in 40 yards in a straight line? I'm more interested in shuttle side to side speed when it comes to linebackers.

AJ Hawk ran a 4.59 and was one of the slowest most nonathletic linebackers I have ever seen.

yup, he ran faster than Clay's 4.67

40 times mean nothing.

I mean, I don't think 40 times are useless by any means. They certainly don't tell the whole picture, but I think it's fair to say 40 times are well-correlated to a players game speed. Players with fast 40 times are generally fast on the football field, and conversely, players with slow 40 times are generally slower than those with better 40 times. As with any individual or positional drill, it is an indicator, and nothing more. But it's a useful metric.

As I said in the other thread on Barrington, his ATTITUDE is what impresses me. That's important at any position, but probably none more so than ILB, where limited athleticism can be masked by effort more than just about anywhere else.

The original topic - whether this is Barrington's defense or not - whether he is the leader or not has a lot to do with WHO is the signal caller of the D, as Hawk was (I think) - the one guy with a radio in his helmet to get words from the sidelines. That is almost always an ILB. The job could go to Clay Matthews, who arguably is a lot better player, but the fact he switches positions back to OLB depending on down, distance, etc. makes Barrington the logical choice - assuming he doesn't get beat out by some high draft pick.

I like the kid's confidence, and I like the idea that a confident player who ain't shy to speak up and say he wants the job gets to be signal caller.

If, and only if he earns the starting spot, then he should start. He did not earn it last season, so what has changed. Better players should be drafted , but the best players earn their spots. Just saying ,"I want to be the man, don't make you the man".

Same deal for every other position on the team. It has been ever so.

1. Barrington was a 7th round draft pick.

2.getting injured his rookie year slowed his progress.

3. Sam did earn his spot last year.
By week 8 it was apparent to the coaches he was the best option.

4. Why doesn't a team just draft the fastest guy at every position?
40 time is so important you would think getting the fastest at every position would get you a winning team every year.

Football speed is much more important at the ILB position than 40 speed.

Had Sam stayed healthy his rookie year, I think the transition that took place last year would have happened in 2013.

Sam not having great numbers at the combine is the reason Ted was able to get him in the 7th RND.

He keeps improving and he will go down as a steal.

He IS the man, has been told that, and sounds like he isn't going to let anyone else take the title away.

Perfectly worded there about needing more tacklers, not bumpers. So ... SOOO tired of seeing players do that in the professional arena.

Let us not forget that LB's are also called upon to cover against passes. In addition, IMO defense players need to be better tacklers than we've seen in the past. Clinton-Dix was a good start, but more tacklers (not bumpers ) are needed.

RB, WR and Defensive Backs are where the 40 times matter most, not your offensive linemen or linebackers.

As for Sam Barrington, he reminds me of Desmond Bishop, who I really wish hadn't been injured. There was something about the Packers defense that once he stepped onto it, they just seemed more tough. I'm hoping Barrington can replicate with even more success.
