Packers are promoting offesnive coordinator Tom Clements to Associate Head Coach AND will take over offensive play-calling duties.

Additionally, Packers are promoting wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett to offensive coordinator.

If true, I give Mike McCarthy a lot of respect for this change.

UPDATED: Clements is set to be ASSOCIATE Head Coach whereas Winston Moss is ASSISTANT Head Coach.

I'll support it, but it seems cockamamie.

First of all, Clements is a dud. Why are they having him call plays? The whole point of "promoting" him is to get him somewhere where he can't shit himself.

Secondly, why Edgar Bennett? Don't get me wrong, I love Edgar, and I think he's future HC material for sure. But let's face it, he's never been QB coach, which is the normal step before OC. Then again, he's coached RBs and WRs, so he's got plenty of experience in the offense. Maybe he's also got seniority over Alex van Pelt.

This crap doesn't make any sense. Why do they have to be so weird with their assitants and titles all the time. Always shifting guys around and coming up with new titles. If Clements becomes associate head coach what happens to Winston Moss being assistant HC? Why do you need to promote Clements to begin with just to have him call plays? Isn't that what an OC usually is anyways? So if they promote Edgar Bennett then I guess we are going to need to add yet another assitant to coach WRs. If this keeps up were going to have 3 or 4 assitant Head Coaches and a couple assitant coordinators to the assistants of the actual coordinators. So weird.

Yeah this seems really odd. Does this mean Edgar has the responsibility of drawing up the game plan during the week with Clements calling plays on game day? Are they both gonna be in the box or just Clements? All that said, I'm happy Edgar is getting more responsibility. I just hope our WRs don't go back to have the dropsies every game like they used to.

this is a very good thing. I've been saying for the last 5 years that he needs to give up the "clip board" and focus on all the other HC duties......About time MM starts to really focus.

Is this official yet? or still rumors?

Packers lead the NFL in points scored last year. I'm not sure this is the best move for the offense. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Additionally, Packers are promoting wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett to offensive coordinator.

why Edgar Bennett?

And the only other long time guys without a recent jump in positions was James Campen with the OL, and you might want to keep him in place.

Teams have inquired about Van Pelt, but not Clements. lol

He might have "it," as far as calling plays. But I'm sceptical. In essence we've now got THREE OCs. The whole thing seems weird. Three OCs, plus Van Pelt, the future OC.

Alternate look at this: Clements is essentially just a figure head play caller while Bennett and A-Rod do all the scheming during the week with A-Rod calling the majority of plays with Clements making suggestions (a la Peyton Manning)

As far as the title of coaches, I think it's easier for another franchise to "steal" a staff member if it's a lateral move, so promotions make this more difficult...I believe. I think the team just did this with Eliot Wolf

As far as this, I'm in the minority but I like Mike as a playcaller, and I've rarely had issues with him in his role, even in the Seattle game. That said, I've always thought it has to be challenging for a HC to be calling defensive or offensive plays in the game while managing everything else. It seems like you'd be compromising some role.
